Check Engine Light 94 500sl
My CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on shortly after filling the gas tank.I waited to see if it would go out after a couple more tank fulls but it didn't..I then took it to the dealer and they said it was a bad AIR FUEL SENSOR.I had them order the part and in the mean time I had to disconnect the battery and after reconnecting the battery the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT went out and has remained off.
I have two questions: 1.Was the AIR FUEL SENSOR really defective or did the new fuel correct the problem? 2.Can you reset the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT without disconnecting the battery? I would appreciate any advise. 94 500SL |

I have no experience with the LH injection on your car, but I think you can reset your Check Engine light by reading and resetting codes with a wire and an L.E.D. as explained in many places including here by Steve Brotherton. For your car, you connect the L.E.D. between sockets 4 and 1 of the 38-pin diagnostic connector.
For what it is worth, I would advise foregoing the replacement of any components right now as long as your car is functioning properly. If the Check Engine light returns, I suggest reading the codes yourself. And check this page of JimF's. He gives info on the LH as well as the meaning of all the codes you might read. |

Don't know what a . . .
AFS is but they probably meant the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow). It's about $400+ at a dealer.
Check out my page (click on the 'www' icon below) and browse through Menu #6 and #7. A homebrew code reader is detailed in Menu #2 at the bottom of the page (but you probably don't need one). That menu details how to read codes using the built in X11/4 led/sw combo. Your car should have one. Need to get the codes read from the various modules to see what to do next. |

Thank for the replies.
This part from the dealer is $21.00 and they called it SENDER UNIT AIR CLEA. The p/n on the bag is 80465109-30. |
