1990 Inside Rearview Mirror Removal
 

Well I just got the Service Manual Library, and the infos not in there.

So I'll ask here.

I got the replacement part for the upper piece on the mirror assembly from Performance. Ridiculousy expensive, but the original is messed up BAD. This is the top piece that fits against the Windshield and the upper trim.

So I have to remove the mirror assembly, then a small panel between them, then I should be able to get to the piece I am replacing.

But I have to remove the rearview mirror assembly some how. Got the back off, (I think the stupid clips broke off when I replaced it) but couldn't figure it out.

Any ideas ????

I removed the rearview on my 140 and my 129 because they both were broken, it is a very tricky process. The mirror actually snaps in there, it uses a spring with two caps on the end that when it passes through the mount locks it into place. This is where the mirror goes into the upper cowl between the widshield and the roof. you literally have to "pop' it out to remove the mirror. The mirror doesn't bolt in, just the parts around it are held on with screws. The mirror in my 96 129 was just loose, but the mirror in my 92 140 was broken. I wish I had a pic, Good luck!

so you just tug on the mirror and it will pop out??

yep, I think I remember using a flathead screwdriver and prying the two metal pieces apart, if you tug on the mirror you might pop it loose. Be careful because if your car is like mine there is all kinds of electronics in there for the alarm and auto-dimming, the 129 was adjusted manually, but the 140 was electrically adjusted and had motors in it. I don't know why MB did this, it was kind of strange, but those darned mirrors are always goofed up, every 129 I test drove while looking for one had the same problem. Good luck and have a great day!

My 129 has all the electronics / motors too.

How is it wired up, contact points in the mount or actual wiring ?

It is actual wires, there are connectors in there. Once you get it loose, you will see them. Good luck!

I used to remove the mirror by grasping at its base and giving a sharp tug. But now I use a small flat-blade screwdriver. From the photo below you can see the spring-loaded catches which secure the mirror, and I have shown the location on the base where I pry with the screwdriver.

After disassembling the mirror from the mount, with the clips falling all over the place, I used a small strip of Velcro on the back of the mirror and the area on the mount. Put it all back together and it works like a charm. Or if you have $895 for a new one (with auto-dimming like mine), then go for it.

Thank you Bobterry99, very good picture. Can anyone tell me if it is nessecary to disconnect the battery before replacing the mirror due to the wiring connections?
