Light clusters for 500SL

I would like to update my '93 light clusters all round (bar the headlights) and just wanted to check if the latest completely clear, and softer rears fit (with no mods) my model. Has anyone updated theirs?

Cheers

I thought so, as the 129 has almost remained the same over 10 or so years.

Out of interest - does anyone have a complete list of changes over time?

Cheers

I think Ashman fitted them to his dad's 600SL. I'm sure he posted pics in the Open Discussion forum.

Thanks JJ

Couldn't find any but I'm pretty sure they do fit. Have asked my local MB dealer and they have confirmed but they also said that I didn't need adhesive for my bonnet (hood) insulation - so I'm sometimes a little sceptical of their advice

I don't know if you're still interested Learoy, but here is a pic of the post-1998 rear light lenses.

Learoy, there's a very complete list with photos here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1166520&posts=15&fid=25

Can you keep us in touch with your progress for the changeouts? I'm planning to do the same for my rear lenses and would be interested to know your experience with costs and problems - if you have any.

Hope it's a straight swap, but nothing is ever like that in real life!

Well, after a quick call to my MB people it appears all red taillights are illegal here. So goodbye to that upgrade!

just upgraded my taillights to the smooth 1999-2000 yr model ones. Complements the rear end of my 92 SL. The tail lights are red but still have a built in orange reflector so its not illegal. and they make the car look years younger than it is

Plus i upgraded to the Euro halogen assy and clear bosch signallamps and the updated euro headlight wipers (One straight piece unlike the american wipers that have 1 piece higher then the other) and it makes the front 5 years younger

even for halogens, the euro ones are very powerful..the SL used to have DOT headlights which were awful at light, they seem to be designed as a headlight within a headlight..yuck..

Having got over excited when I picked up my new lenses for the front, side and rear, I was only to be completely let down to discover MB had given me the '95-'98 lens combo, not the post '98. duh!

Sleeper - out of interest, have you got any pics of your '92 with the new lights front and rear? I'd be very interested in taking a peek if that's ok?

So back to MB Tues to swap them! However, today I took a quick look in how to replace the assemblies and I couldn't believe how easy it will be - I suspect the whole job to be finished in no more than than 20 minutes!!!!

At least that's something in my favour.

At last, some sun and time to take some gratuitous pics.

Tolerances on the front indicators meant fitting these was a little more tricky than expected. I also discovered that the new side repeater lenses do not fit the '89-'98 bulb holder beneath. However with a little filing and fettling all can be made good

Hi Lea,

I was going to ask about your light upgrades when you replied to my throttle cable problem. I must say you car looks sweet. It instantly looks many years younger. The rear clusters without the orange indicators give a different appearance to the rear of the car.

Money well spent!! Did you buy the complete module or just the lens. I understand you can buy just the lens without the bulb holders etc.

Nice number plate as well!

Regards

Learoy,

Nice shine to your SL in those photos. I hope that's an indicator of current fine weather since I'm going to be over in UK in a couple of weeks.

Do you have a more distant shot from the back so we can see how the lights look to the casual bystander?

They really make a difference. Now you'll have to change the rims, the steering wheel, the exterior mirrors...

Thanks for your comments.

I bought all genuine parts from MB direct and complete rear modules - they are definitely my favourite of all the lenses. They set me back 110GBP each, which was only slightly more expensive than Performance Products! and I get an original invoice and all MB boxes to keep too.

BTW - I wish that was my plate

Ken

Weather's been good here with occasional showers 'April showers' we call it but in general it's getting warmer with some days up to 20degC. I live in the South East so it's always warm here ;-)

If weather permits I'll take a couple more piccies (hopefully with lid off) and post the odd one or two.

Learoy,

Thanks for the weather update!

Now, can you tell me more about your rear lights? Did you buy them complete, or just the lenses? And what year did you get, apart from being post-98?

Like Britain, our country doesn't allow red indicators, so I'm guessing yours have an orange reflector in the base. Is that correct?
