Are you sure it needs replacing? MY 280E acted like it needed a new tranny. I took it to one shop and they tried to talk me out of a couple of grand. I then took it to another shop I already had an appointment with for some front end work, and the mechanics there said they could probably fix it for a couple of hundred bucks, They pulled the pan off, changed a few parts out and did a filter change, and I drove it for another eight years.

buymbparts has rebuilds with torque converters for $1695 - that's about the best deal I've seen. Figure a grand for labor, fluid, etc.

I just changet the tranny in my 115 300D. The unit cost $1050 w/o convertor. No sooner had I put it in than I saw an ad for tranny AND convertor for the same price. The installation is easy. I did mine alone on a gravel driveway with some jack stands, a floor jack and a sheet of 1/2" ply wood in about 4 hrs. I have had more fun in my life but the cheapest I tranny shop if found that would install one was $300. That works out to about $75 an hour which isn't too bad.

There is a drain plug in the convertor that keeps the oil mess to a minimum. You have to disconnect the drive shaft and drive shaft center bearing which is no problem. You will need a 1/2" drive ratchet, a universal, about 18 inches worth of extensions, and an allen head socket. I can't remember the exact size.

Good luck.
