Neither of these are "first" projects! Removing the "dash pad" involves effectively disassembly of the entire dashboard and its contents. Your replacement dash may cost over 2K (the PART is over 2K!!).

Most people buy a "Dash cap".

The convertible top is NOT easy. I spoke to the best shop in town and they told me that EVERY EMPLOYEE (already skilled in upolstery) screwed up their first top installation - that's why they order TWO ahead of time for a new guy!

If you are interested in replacing the soft top yourself AND are somewhat of a perfectionist AND can follow instructions, do a search through the archives of this forum. I replaced mine over a year ago (2 years now?) and have answered this question many times.

If you have questions, post them here (and send me an email, my participation here goes in streaks). I'd be happy to answer specific questions.

Instructions for installing a soft top. http://www.worlduph.com/mbtopinstall.htm
After you read this, you should take the earlier advise and let the professionals do it.

How about removing a dash cap that's been on the car awhile? My 83 280 SL has a black dash cap, and I hate how it looks with my navy interior. I've been told its paintable, and have seen the paint to do it advertised on other mb sites. I doubt if I could paint it correctly without removing it. If I remove and paint it ,will it peel later in the Texas heat? Does any one know a source of factory-grade navy dash caps for the 107s?

I'm not sure about blue, but I had excellent luck with my black 1968 Camaro dashboard for several years using vinyl spray paint. Never peeled, but got dingy - so I would repaint it every year or two. A tip: as THIN as possible. I think putting it on thick contributes to peeling. Also, take the CLEANING seriously. Can't be a trace of silicone protectant when you put it on. Also, if you spray it the overspray is murder to get off and it seems to get everywhere. Take the cap off if if you can, and do this far away from everything else.
