hardtop
A renter from several years ago left and never returned to claim a hardtop for what I assume was an SL. How do I determine the year of the thing and if it has any value?

A fair condition hardtop from any year has a pretty substantial value. They go for $250 all the way up to $1500 on e-bay.

The biggest problem with selling hardtops is that they cost a fortune to ship. Finding a relatively local buyer will increase it's value.
You can look on eBay at the different SLs (eBay Motors > Passenger Vehicles > Mercedes-Benz > SL-class) to get an idea. All '72-'89 hardtops will look the same. I can't speak for the other SL styles. I've seen the '72-'89 hardtops go for $150-$500 in good condition on eBay.

I've always wondered if anyone has tried modifiying a hardtop by putting a sheet of smoked plexiglass ala Porsce 930 in the roof. Anyone ever seem that done?
There always seem to a lot of them on ebay. I've been told that as the cars are wrecked or worn out, the frequently stored hardtops hang around in good condition, creating an oversupply. |
