1998 SL500 Brakes Upgrade
I have a 1998 SL500. I live in the mountainous area of British Columbia and on the long downhill stretches my brakes start to fade. I change the break fluid every year but in the end I need better breaks (front and rear) that the car came with. Does anybody know if the breaks from SL600 would be a direct fit?
I search the forum but I could not find anything. |

Take a look at http://www.performaceproducts.com They sell cross drilled and slotted roters for pretty cheep(275.00 for the fronts) or you could pop for the Brembo upgrade kit.

Is your vehicle pre- or post- June 1998? I ask because post-98 cars have upgraded brakes (larger discs, calipers and pads) which require the fitment of 17"alloy wheels. You may want to go down this OEM route. I find my brakes very strong, although the pedal lacks the stiffness and immediacy of some newer cars (eg Audis, which just need to be tickled to pull up on a sixpence).

My car is pre June 1998. It has 119 engine (4 valve). It has been suggested to use Brembo brakes. Unfortunately Brembo does not offer brakes for SL500 only for SL600. That is why I asked if SL600 brakes would fit. Size of the wheels is not a problem because I am planning to go with 18-inch wheels anyway. I appreciate that you are helping me.
