300 sl week points.
Being a new owner of a 1990 300sl, I would be interested in learning what to expect, so far as maintenance problems.

None, Great car. Welcome and good luck. Genneraly there are no sugnificant problems with this model. The straight six is a very good engine. As with most of the six's, keep an eye on head gasket leaks and sometimes the rear diff will develope small leaks. One suggestion is the have all fluid changed to establish a good start from a maintaince standpoint. Oil, filter, trans fluid & filter change, brake fluid purge, radiator flush, diff. oil change. Then your certain it's been done. Also try a K & N air filter - on the six it gives a nice boost in hp (v. small but good). Shocks usually go about 85/100K. Replace them and the ride improves dramaticly. I'm sure other members on the forum will be more versed then I, so more feedback I'm sure will be coming. Have fun.
Oh, by the way - Don't get caught with the top up on a sunny day, the Mercedes police will give you a warning. LOL Bruce Hat

Ben,
I have a 1990 300SL that I've owned for a little over 4 years. I've driven it about 44,000 miles and it now has 69.000 miles on it. It was virtually trouble free the first year I owned it. Since then, I've replaced 3 out of 4 top latches. I think this might be a common problem as changes were made to the latches in future years. I also replaced the water pump and the expansion valve. Another expensive replacement was the SRS control module for the airbag and seatbelt. I just replaced the cruise control unit and that still hasn't cured my cruise control problem (it holds for a few minutes and then disengages). I think the engine and tranny are pretty close to bullet proof. I try to keep it all in the proper perspective. It's a great car and it's just about 15 years old. It still turns heads whereever I go and my wife says she can't picture me getting another sports car. She loves all of the storage room this has compared to just about any other two seater. Good luck with your 300 SL. I think you made a wise choice.

Cruise control
I think there have been a number of posts on the cruise kicking off and fixed by replacing the overvoltage relay. Worked on my 124. Craig

I'll second or third the above mentioned oil leaks.
M103 and M104 engines are known for oil leaks at the right rear corner (passenger side) of the head gasket and at the front timing chain cover seal. Most leaks appear as just a dampness with an oil film, but eventually over time will get slowly worse. It's just an oil leak, and you can generally let them leak until they are leaking so bad that you can't stand it anymore.
