"New" 280SL
Here is a picture of my "new" 1984 280SL. It is a euro-spec 185 HP M110, five-speed, one-owner car with 12,676 miles (verified).
No AC, crank windows. Anthracite over light grey tex. Orginal except for battery and tires. I believe the seller's statement that the car has never been in the rain. The Wayward Woman (380SL) is going to Maryland to be a donor car to a 380SLC that needs a front end. I am looking forward to being more of a collector and less of a rehab specialist.

Mine was imported by a pilot who bought it over from Germany. It has an MB dealer installed AC unit, retrofitted here after the car arrived in the US. It works a little strange but it works well. Cold air only comes out of the middle vents, while the side vents blow heat only. I don't know if this is the way the thing was designed or if what installed incorrectly, but it has worked fine in the Houston heat so I am not complaining.
ctaylor, you are a lucky man. I have driven 280 Mercedes, both sport and sedan, since the mid 80s. I would kill to get my hands on a 12k example of a mid 80s model, for a 5spd I would slice off my right arm to boot. Where did you find that killer machine? If I were you I would never sell it. |

Re: "New" 280SL
ctaylor, Nice 280SL. I am drooling. How about posting some pictures of the interior especially showing us the 5-speed transmission and the window crank handles. Nice to see rare things like that along with anything else that is different from the ubiquious USA version 380SL's.

Congratulations on the beautiful Euro 280SL. We bought ours from an Air Force officer who bought it in Germany and imported it himself. It's "sliverblue" with blue plaid cloth/tex (heated) seats, and no a/c. I love the smooth character of the inline six. It's not big on torque, but it revs nicely. The five speed stick is the reason we bought the car. If the attached photo comes through, it shows the car in our driveway just before Christmas, wearing its Nokian snow tires and hardtop, on a rare December day in North Dakota warm enough to wash a car outside.

6 years. bought it with 148,000. the car has been flawless since owned. car runs real strong. burns some oil but i always check the oil level for that. there are a couple of these cars for sale here in northern california with the 5 speed stick. you certainly have found and unbelieveable car. steve cherwon |

I "almost" became an owner of a 5 spd 280SL. The deal fell through because the seller wants more after the deal was made. Another one was sold before I had a chance. Sigh!
My friend let me test drive his 380SL automatic, somehow the 5 spd 280SL feels better.

Euro 280 SLs autos come with a rare among SL's 4 spd automatic, and they drive a lot different than the 380 SL with the 3 spd trans.

Just drove my Euro 500 to a local fireworks display. No need for chairs, top down and watch the boom-booms. Kinda enjoyed the envious looks the car got! Thats one reason I bought it. Not another one within 50 miles. Love the Euros.

Couple questions for those of you with manual transmissions:
Tell us about shifting - is the gear shift leaver positioned well and does it shift smoothly? Clutch petal stiff or spongy? I think I read that the 6 cylinder 300SL in the 107 body also was offered with manual transmission. Anyone know much about these? I've read many posts that the 280SL engine is very reliable and durable. CW www.380SL.8k.com |

No complaints about shifting at least so far. I find the throw to be a bit long. Clutch is fine. I need to pay attention to get a smooth shift into 2nd and I think this is because it has a large difference in ratios.
I assume you mean the 129 300SL. People seem to like them, but they are difficult to sell because the US SL buyers want the V8 and the automatic. The sporting crowd goes for the SLK because it is smaller and more nimble.
