Clunk, Clunk

This is my day to catch up and list all the little problems that have cropped up w/my 560sl.

This ones not real bad, but when I speed up or slow down there is a slight "clunking" sound which seems to be coming from the rear (drive shaft, where it connects to the differential).

Is this something I can live with for a while? Whats the best advice!

Thanks for the help!

Check to make sure that someone is not in the trunk!

I've had a slight similar noise off & on, typically under certain circumstances like a shift while turning at lower speeds; my shop took a look while doing other things and found no particular problems. The diff is attached through bushings, of course, but on the 107 is so close to you as the driver that hearing noise you wouldn't hear in a different body layout (eg sedan) is not abnormal in itself.

Just to echo the other guy, 99% of the time its something rolling around in your trunk.

Well, it would be nice if I kept a cluttered trunk, as that might be the issue but this definitely feels like some kind of backlash either in differential or driveshaf.

Maybe I'm being too picky but I like to catch things in their infancy rather that waiting for it o become expensive...

Thanks

Could be the flex disc. My 380 SE does it when I have a full load of passengers. Definite vibration.

clunking problems can be several things, the rear half shafts can cause this clunking noise, which causes this at certain speeds especially when slowing down. The other items to check is the center support bearing, and the flex discs. Good luck!

i get this same clunk occasionally when slowing down. i was tempted to go right to the flex disks and replace both front & rear but thought better of it. last time i had a problem with warm start ups i started throwing parts at the car and worked my way from the gas tank to the distributor. lesson learned was proper diagnosis will save you needless repairs.
problem is it's hard to duplicate the noise consistently to have it diagnosed. sometimes you have no choice but to let it get worse so that it is easily evident.
just as an aside, check the spare tire jack. if it is loose it will clunk against the body metal and convince you the rear differential is thumping.
