passenger seat switch?

I have just purchased a gorgeous 1996 SL500 (12,000 miles!) and I have a stupid question (having never owned a Mercedes before). It's driving me crazy!
On the side of the passenger seat at the seat base there's a single small switch that I have no idea what it does. It has the shape of a man on it when switched one way that disappears when switched the other. I have looked in the owners manual but could find nothing.
Could anybody out there please let me know what the function of this is?

Thanks,
Cliff

Hi! I have no answer to your question, but would love to know where you found a 1996 with only 12,000 miles......and what the price was if it's not too forward! Color?

That switch locks the seatbelt retracter so you can put in a child safety seat.
You'll know it's on because the passenger will complain about the seatbelt locking them in as I found out. I forget which way is off.
