WTB: RUST FREE 240D, 300D, 190D, etc... midwest
My 300TD is a little too rusty to use this year as a winter commuter. Anyone got a rust-free diesel for sale in the midwest? I'd love to track down a 240D or 190D with a manual transmission, but the chances of that happening in the next few weeks are probably slim to none.
Car needn't be a creampuff, but I would like something that's presentable, solid mechanically (it'll be relied upon for regular 2+ hour commutes in the winter), and must be rust-free (I HATE body work!). Thanks! Chris

Buy a fwd Japanese car, good rust free Merc's are getting harder to come by. No one cares if a Civic rots away.

Do what I did: get a VW Jetta TDI for a "beater".
Front wheel drive, Blizzaks, heated (black leather) seats, heated mirrors. You can't go wrong for a winter car. I live in MN... Maybe it's just me, but when I find and purchase the "perfect" MB diesel, I plan on keeping it that way. Mine will never see the outside of my garage during the winter. - Patrick |

I heard about two deals today.
One is a NA 300TD that will go for about $2500. It is not perfect but in good condition. The owner bought a newer wagon. One is an early '90s 2.5 300D that will go for about $5500. Odometer says 120 or 130K. Neither car is so nice that I would cry if you killed it but nice enough that I would drive it myself. Both are on the Alabama gulf coast. There is a 240D in the paper today for $1800? I know nothing about it. |

cscmc1 just a statement I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I was just saying that a fwd car is better in the snow then a rwd car without an lsd. Also snow tires are expensive!

Not sure what all the "killing" comments re: a MB diesel are about. The plan is to have a year-round car. Just because I am shopping for a car right now and mentioned that the Mustang won't get me through winter does NOT mean that I plan to buy a winter beater and/or abuse a MB. I just need a year-round car, that's all. Anyway, yes, a FWD car would be easier to drive in the snow, but it's still a soul-less FWD econobox. Give me a MB in almost any condition ANYday over one of those. I did my time in Escorts and the like. Given the choice, I'll take a MB every time, and as we know, older ones are out there to be rescued at reasonable prices. Thanks for the tips so far, folks! Saw an ad for a 190D 2.2 5 speed in Chicago... hope the seller will call me back and say it's still available. Also have an interest in a 190E in the region. Chris

...on car washes and salt...
Taking your car through an automatic car wash in winter to get the salt off may end up causing more trouble than its worth.
You see, most car washes recycle the wash water...so after the first few other salty cars go thru before you, you're paying to get salt water sprayed at high pressure into your car's innards. The "heated garage" isn't a godsend either, if you drive a car in from the salt and just park it for the night. As the salty slush melts, capilarry (sp) action pulls it up into any exposed problem. In the old days, chauffeurs used to spend as much time cleaning slush off their cars before they were put away in wintertime as grooms used to spend on horses. |
