New key - sticker shock at dealer

I wanted to get an extra key made for my new 92 190E and the counter guy told me it would be

$65

Now I am new to foreign cars but that seems ridiculous!!

Is there any other source?

Sounds a little high, not too much though. Ask the dealer what they want for a new romote key or keyless go card...........then you'll be shocked!

When I got my 1985 wagon the key was rust and worn out. I called the dealer, Greenway here in houston...They wanted 85 for a new key. And if it didn't work, that was my problem...no refund.

85 dollars????

I have head from others on the form that is cost more like 20, but I haven't gound from which dealer...

New key, $26

Jackson Automotive in Macon, GA is my local dealer. They ordered a key for my previous 123, an '83 240D, and when it didn't work (new cylinder by PO) they allowed me to get store credit (I needed antifreeze).

My latest 123 is an '85 300D and when I broke off my copied key I ordered a new one, $26 again, and it works perfectly. I ordered two blanks from an online hardware co. and plan to cut copies from the new key.

Try their parts counter here: http://www.jackson.mercedescenter.com/mbcenter/b/serviceparts/serviceparts.jhtml

Here is where I got my key blanks:

Hope this helps

My dealer charged me $26 for various W126 and W124 keys.
Much over that is crazy unless the key has electonics built-in.

You should be so lucky to buy one for a 1997 C280. Over a hundred bucks. I know.

$65 sound like the price for a new lock cylinder with key. Call Rusty (800-741-5252) or Caliber Motors for a quote on a VIN-coded key (I don't think FastLane can get them - can they?). The price should be in the $20-$30 range. If your ignition lock is getting sticky, replace the cylinder (it will come with a new key as a bonus). Trust me - it's a $500+ job to have the steering lock replaced if the cylinder freezes up (DON'T ask how I know this.)

Warning: DO NOT use a copy made by a locksmith as your daily-use key! They are brass and will leave little shavings as they wear. Use a dealer key, which is steel. The brass copies are fine as emergency backups, however the last time I checked (a few years ago), it was cheaper to get a new steel VIN-cut key from the dealer than it was for a brass copy at the locksmith! YMMV, etc...

I got new keys for my 1992 300CE from the dealer in beverly hills for roughly $15.00 each. $65 sounds way too high to me. I ordered 2 and will be ordering one or two more and the original valet key to boot.

I bet they misquoted you.

I would find out what exactly theya re selling you and if they want to charge more than $25 which I think is still too much, then they are ripping you off.

Like I said I got mine from the dealer in beverly hills for around $15.00 each. I was expecting to pay more but when they told me the price I was even more ok with it.

Ashman is correct. I paid $17 for a W124 key and $25 for a W123 key about 3 years ago, from MB of Sacramento (CA). No way it should be more than ~$25 or so! (But I never did understand why the plain ol' double-cut 123 key cost more than the laser-cut high-security 124 key!)

Keys

I paid $15.00 each for two keys for a 1994 C280 at the local dealership in Charlotte, NC. That was the only time the dealship was cheaper than the local locksmith!

The only problem was the one week delay and the proving that I owned the car.

A friend just bought a VIN-coded key from the local dealer two days ago for his 1987 300E. Cost was $23.50 plus tax. Sumthin's fishy with that $65 quote...

You know the Sacramento area? I live about an hour west of Sacramento, in Sonoma County. Do you know of any pick-n-pull Mercedes wrecking yards in this area? Although I've only been looking for a couple of months, I have not turned any up.

I used to live near Sacto. The main MB yard is Silver Star in Rancho Cambodia. Er, I mean Cordova. There are no P&P yards that specialize in MB's. There are 3 or 4 P&P yards in Sacramento (one next to Silver Star, one in Rocklin, and two more) that usually have a handful of old MB's, but mostly W123, W116, and older. Maybe some early 126's. I saw a W201 once, and never a W124. You need to visit regularly, as when a good car arrives, it gets raped pretty quick - inside a week or two usually, where butchers will destroy good parts to quickly remove what they're after, if you know what I mean. For most late 124 parts, I shop around via phone and usually end up buying stuff from all over the USA.

On SilverStar's website, you can sign up for e-mail notification of their new inventory based on what chassis types your interested in.
