1989 190e runs rich
Hello guys. Im new here and have had a few benz before. I thought this might be the best place to find out and get some help. I have a 1989 190e with the 2.6. It started to run rich . It used a tank of gas to go 98 miles. yep that bad all at once. The cruise started to act up the same time as in it surges. If u get down on the gas pedal it will blow blk smoke out and start to run smooth agian. I took it to a mech who has worked on it before. He charged me 800.00 dollars and half way home it started running like it did before. I called and he said oh I told u the control unit is going out. Thats why the car will run good than not. I take it the control unit is the jetronic control unit under the windshield. This would be the mixture control right and is why its running rich? If so does any one have a control unit for sale for this model? The part number off the unit is 0280800280 bosch 6zyl if that means anything. Thanks for any help

He said he adjusted it lean as he could but the control unit is reading it then its not.Could the mass airflow meter be going bad? Also said the pre cats could be stopping up and causing it. Any one know why that would make it run rich? When its idling in park you can let it set and run and step on the gas and will blow blk smoke out and leave a blk mark on the ground or drive. Like I said before it used like 10 gallons in 95 miles. Thanks
