You Car Parters ! Good Cheap Shipper!!

I see there are some parters out there like me! :) If you need a shipper for your large heavy parts, give these guys a call ! You may be surprised at the ship cost! Have used them twice now once for a hood to NY and now a tranny to CA. They will go B2B or door to door :P
Call SBT "Small Business Tranportation" @ 1-888-368-6022 Ext 21 and talk to Chris

No I own no stock in this company is just a tip to help out some of you guys! ;)

Good info...I plan of getting a fairly large shippment sent to me...and the shipping will be more than the value of the parts as it is.

RickM 07-26-2005 01:42 PM

Smokie, what was the cost for shipping? It'd be nice to have as an example.

Other cost effective shipping alternatives are:

Grey Hound bus - Very fast and inexpensive./ Ideal for bumpers, fenders etc.

National Van Lines - if they have room in a truck they'll add your piece inexpensively.

Fedex Freight - Drop off at Fedex office. Typically cheaper than common carrier.

I believe it was about $75 to ship a Audi Hood to NY area and I just sent a tranny from NC to San Deigo for $150 . :)

My dad used to get all his Mercedes parts shipped on a Greyhound bus. If he called the dealership in Kansas City by 9 a.m. on a weekday, it would arrive in our town (a tiny burg in Kansas six hours from the dealer) by 9 o'clock the next morning.

This was in the 1970s and there was no other way (except Parcel Post from USPS) to get anything shipped to a place like that. And Parcel Post probably would've taken five days.

Great to know that Greyhound can still deliver like this.

http://www.freightcenter.com/ is another good source. It compares various companies and provides a free quote and reference number and allows you to save the quote.

Auto shippers

Does anyone know of a cheap auto shipper on the East coast?
(Maryland to North Carolina)

kellysguy 03-14-2006 05:06 PM

me too

I just sent a HUGE box w/ two fenders cross country on greyhound and it was cheap. I could have saved half, if I hadn't used such a big box.

Dee8go 06-28-2006 03:27 PM

Weight limit?

Do you happen to know what the weight limit is for shipping via Greyhound? I assume they are better for large, bulky items as opposed to really heavy stuff.

Tobias MB 08-21-2006 02:23 AM

With Greyhound....WARNING

Be very careful shipping anything COD with Greyhound. In the past it has taken months to finally get my money from them and heard all sorts of excuses as to why I hadn't received it. They have been through many problems and close to bankruptcy so figure they could use my money for awhile at no cost! If you don't hear from them, be persistent!

cheap shipping

I have also shipped things via United Airlines from one terminal to another. I was shipping a computer to my nephew from LA to NY and all the other shippers had rules about how to separate the boxes, and were very expensive. United shipped it for 1/3 the cost, if both shipper and receiver are willing to go to the airport.

How does it work with Greyhound? You take it to the terminal, they ship it to the destination, and then they call the recipiant to come and pick it up once it arrives? I'm thinking of using them to get some rims shipped to me.

Yes, that's how it works.

Another option for heavy items is Forward Air. It Airport to airport and relatively inexpensive.

Another Freight alternative Old Dominion. Best prices I could find on the net.

lietuviai 09-23-2007 10:20 PM

I had someone ship me a bumper cover by Greyhound. Cost from MO to WA was around $45.
Not bad I thought.

eagle-co94 10-10-2007 12:13 PM

I also used freightquote.com and they quoted me $190 to ship a full-size sedan hood from central FL to Minnesota! That was about half the price of going directly to the shipper.

Shipping to Canada?

Any recommendations for shipping to Canada? UPS, FedEx and DHL are too expensive and I need a differential carrier shipped soon.

Any tips are appreciated. :)

you guys should check out

www.uship.com

its pretty cool. What it is, is a website where average joes and companies bid on your item to be shipped. Lowest bidder wins of course. We had someone buy the spare body tub from the parts car delorean and the buyer put a shipping page on uship and had people bid on shipping from winter have,fl to somewhere in mississippi(or was it bama?). But anyways the winning bidder is a regular guy with a car hauler that will bring it from here to his place.

Not sure how insurance claims are handled or w/e but its pretty cool if you have a large object that needs to be shipped.

Johnhef 12-28-2008 09:58 PM

I tried uship once for a complete car. Evryone's bid was higher then the quote I got from one of the regular car shippers websites so I gave up on it.

markham 04-01-2009 03:17 PM

Don't forget Amtrak. It's pretty cheap, like ~$35 for first 100 lbs, $0.35 per lb thereafter. The only caveat is that you must pick the package up and drop it off at an Amtrak station, and really heavy items can only be shipped from large stations (major metro areas) with handling equipment. I've used it plenty of times for heavy items.

markham 04-01-2009 03:33 PM

For shipping cars, keep in mind that many so-called car-transport companies are really only brokers or middlemen, who sub-contract the shipping to individual shippers. I recently confirmed this shipping my wife's car from FL to CO. I had to pay the broker, whom I had initially contacted, a $200 "deposit" via credit card to set up the service, then paid the driver $500 in cash upon arrival. The driver told me that the $500 was the only money he saw and that he had no idea what the broker charged. That said, the driver gave me the number of his company and told me that he would charge me the same $500 for the same trip at a later date. Thus I could avoid the brokerage fees next time. So there are two morals to the story: first, if possible try to deal directly with a driver, and second, if you have to deal with a broker, know that there is plenty of bargaining room on his/her commission/fee.

I'm sure this is also the case with other shipping contractors, whether one is shipping cars or engines/parts.

As far as uship goes, all of the bids for my trip were far higher than what I found soliciting shipping bids by more conventional means directly on the internet.

cth350 11-28-2009 03:15 PM

UShip is definitely hit and miss. I have had one great success and one dismal failure with the drivers responding. Once you find a good guy, call him first the next time.

I just shipped a crate of parts from the US to Germany. I found this company to be good at customer service... http://www.uboxworldwide.com ... I dropped the crate off at their Linden, NJ location and it's on its way.

I followed this advice to a 'T', 'cept Chris has a new extension, and can attest to the positive experience. Transmission shipped from Ohio to Rhode Island = $125... tough to beat. :2thumbsup

have not used SBT yet, but did ship a w123 door from pa to chicago for $52 using greyhound...terminal to terminal but luckily it was close to us on both ends

Tobias MB 09-21-2010 12:40 AM

Had a sorry experience from greyhound once.

I shipped a Porsche fender by Greyhound and by COD. The customer got the fender and paid the COD, verified by his receipt. Greyhound took almost six months to send the money to me and after lots a harrasing telephone calls.
They may be better now with a management change but just a warning if using COD.
