It's not that hard to do, but the cost is prohibitive unless you have a source for the donor parts locally. You need the hood, fenders, headlights, and trunk lid to start with. If you want the really complete look you need the rear bumper also. If the recipient is a 1986-89 model, you also need the 8 wide side moulding pieces and two rockers covers - all 10 are *very* hard to find used, especially as a complete set - and don't forget the stainless steel trim on the moulding, AND both front & rear bumper. Oh yeah, then paint for everything too - another few grand there, on top of everything else. That's most of the exterior items.

Yes - just look at any stock 1994-1995 E320 sedan. You can make a 1986 model look exactly like that with bolt-on parts.

Oh yeah, one other thing I forgot - the door handles from 1990-up have a chrome (or stainless steel?) insert, which looks really nice. Finding a set of used door handles isn't easy or cheap, and the cost for new ones is crazy (hundreds of dollars). I picked up a set fairly cheap for when I eventually paint my 1987 300D.

You can get a "similar" look by painting the bumpers and side molding the same color as the body and installing euro headlights.

If nothing else it does "update" the look for just the cost of labor & paint & headlights.
