WTB: Person with a W123 and Cutting Wheel

I need to repair a rust hole in my 240D's left rear trunk. Attached is a picture of the hole. If anybody has a parts car that is rust free in this area and that they don't mind cutting a hole in send me a PM and we can talk price and make arrangements. Thanks. -Bryan

You Could Use Fiberglass

You could grind away the bad area which you will probably do anyway or cut out the bad and then make a fiberglass sandwich using fiberglass and rosin and cover the hole...after 3-4 hours frind the fiberglass as nedded then use plain fiberglass with ground up fiberglass and hardener and fix any of the area that needs it....it is a lot easier than getting somebody to ship you a metal piece from a area that has a tendency to rust...Jim

Thanks for the tip but I would rather use steel for the repair.

STeel vs Fiberglass

I understand and after some thought it will be easier to use steel especially if you have a wire welder... if you don't find any one that will sell you a steel insert, please let me know and I will see what I can find...Jim

I am planning to use a small 110V wire feed welder that I have. Thanks for the help. Do you have a parts 123?

123 Parts Car

I have a couple 123 parts cars but finding one with no rust in that area is tough. If I find one with very little rust I will get back with you....Jim

Thank you. Surface rust would be alright, as long as it is not too bad. Thanks again. -Bryan

I'm no expert, but..

it seems to be a pretty hidden area. Can't you cut (and moderately bend) some pieces of sheet metal to fit?

It looks to me as if you could use a set of snips, some sheet metal and a wire feed welder to make a perfect replacement part. Once you cut out the old rust, just use some cardboard to make a template, then cut & weld the new pieces until they fit. Then weld to car.

Neal

I could, but it would be hard to get it just right. There are allot of complex curves in this area. The repair will require me to cut to a place that will be visible when looking at the profile of the car. I figure for $40 or so it's worth my while to have a part cut off of a junker.

Any word Jim?
