Why are cherished number plates cherished in the UK?

Rajinder

Why do these numbers sell for "silly money"? (With all due respect to you and your brethren and sisthern in the UK who buy sell and trade them, I have seen agencies that do it too!

UK Car columnist Jeremy Clarkson in an article in CARS "JMC NO"
writes

"I was once forced to spend a week behind the wheel of an FSO ({Polish built Fiat) which sported a registration plate that said FSO 5. ...You see, FSO 5 is probably worth well into four figures territory and I could see the drivers of neighboring cars howling with Pythonesque glee at me, the buffoon they thought had to spend so much on a number plate, he couldn't afford anything better than a Polonez

Worse are the idiots who spend a fortune on numbers like 316BMW for their BMW 316s.

We all know it's a 316 because the badge says so (onthe bootlid) and anyway, had the buffoon not bought the number plated, he could have probably afforded a 325i

There is the tale of a chap who lost a retina in World War 2 and now drives round in a car which b ears the registration number 1 EYE"

Who on earth is daft to pay up to 30,000 GPB for a number plate for goodness sakes?

We Yanks don't understand this. Please enlighten the philistines !!!!

Cheers
Jim
