hello jeff,i am in louisville ky.
mostly i collect the older diesels ,so i stepped out on the limb with this 89 300te. figured why not, well after seeing the head that i removed which has been soften with hi heat,it looks like i really opened a can of worms this time.
i did some research on aluminum and discovered that anytime you get aluminum over 320 deg f and let it cool slowly that the metal will be softened.
one sure way to tell if you have a rebuildable head is to test on rockwell b scale, should be in the hi 80's,another way is to observe the metal under the head bolt,if the metal has been mushroomed by the head bolt surface and not flat then that shows some softness.
let me know if you think this is a head that can be rebuilt.
