Need 86-91 126 Used Power Steering Pump
Does anyone have a used power steering pump I can rebuild?
The one I took out broke-off . The part number is 126 460 2280, TYP 73, 82 bar. They can be found in Mercedes 86-87 SDL Turbo 88-91 300SE / SEL 91 350SD / SDL

Hi, Bob, there was a pump on an '84 300SD at the local salvage yard Friday, but I noticed it was somewhat different from that on the model you need. There was a 1987 300 E; would it work?

PS Pump for 126
Quote:
Thanks for the help. Someone else on this forum already located one for me and the person who sold me the wrong one says he is going to replace the one he sent with the right one. FYI My PS pump: PN: 126 460 2280, TYP 67, 82 bar Mercedes Models: 86-87 SDL Turbo 88-91 300SE or 300SEL 91 350SD or 350SDL For some reason they are kind of hard to find.

Bob,
I can't tell from part number - does the application car have ASD? My 91 350 SDL does and it requires a tandem pump ... rebuilt kit also harder to find and more expensive.

I have a reseal kit lying around somewhere if you want it, I bought too many on accident. I'll just mail you the thing. VERY easy to rebuild that pump
Not really following how you broke the old pump...

My car does _not_ have the tandem pump. The correct pump is being sent tomorrow.

That is really nice of you. In the morning I will see if I can cancel my order for the kit. I bet it has not shipped. If I can cancel it I will have you send it.

Well, it's not too bad, I guess. Don't forget all the stories from people whose pumps never pumped again after they took them apart, though.
If it's the Vickers pump, perhaps this will help... DIY Resealing Vickers Power Steering Pump W124

That is a good article. I used it on the last one I rebuilt. I would add...

The pump is easy to rebuild, except the clip that holds the shaft from the back side is not easy to remove. It took two people and three screw drivers. On this next one I am going to put a rubber band around the vanes of the pump so they don't fall out and they go back where they came from.

Good idea about the rubber band. Those vanes AIN'T gonna stay in place if they have anything to say about it.

My next rebuild
Quote:
Are there replaceable seals in there? Am I better off not messing with it? I didn't undo last one because I was afraid of some spring exploding out when I take it apart. My main concern was the shaft seal which would get all dried up in a parts car in the scorching sun. Also, I am wondering if there are seals on the connections to the pump. It looks like metal-to-metal, but the guy who is supplying the pump said he was including O-rings for that. I did not see any O-rings come out when I took the old one out.

More on the Power Steering Pump Saga...
My first source for used power steering pumps sent me the wrong one twice, then said he didn't have the right one.
The power steering pump I took out was broken in three places on the mounting points. I located a second one that turned out to have one cracked mounting bracket. Two of the same PS pump from the 1991 350SD car, both with the same problem? It sounds like there is a problem with these. See attached pictures. Does anybody know if another power steering pump will work? Maybe the "126 460 1480" which has the same pressure rating, and input and output fittings, and looks like it has the same mounting geometry? See third attached picture. I hope I have located a good one from John Candy. -BOB-

I think I found a pump, finally.
I finally found a PS pump for $165 from "Bill's Used Mercedes Parts" http://www.mercedespartsused.com/
866-228-7580 The Vickers "126 460 3580" is the same pump as a "126 460 2280". The rebuild kit was $6 + shipping. The Mercedes dealer wanted $536.64 for a rebuilt one and $846 for a new one. Buds Benz wanted $295 for a rebuilt one. http://mppumps.com wants $140 + $200 core, but mine is broken so no core. Just for comparison, my friend bought a used 50K mile engine and transmission for his Toyota corolla for $750.

Car on the road again
My car is on the road again. I was able to put together a working PS pump from a junkyard one the guts mine that broke for about $180 including shipping. The rebuild is very easy. If you rebuild one put a rubber band around the vanes of the pump so they don't fall out.
