***In Search of M103 for 1991 300SEL***

Hey Guys,

I'm not a big time poster here on MercedesShop but I always look around and enjoy the many threads. OmegaBenz pointed me this way a while back for great techincal information and its been great so far.

I currently am in search of a used M103 motor for a 1991 300SEL that has under say 100k miles. The motor is for a close friend whos car is in impeccable condition but the 320k mile old engine is just beyond repair at this point. He cant even think about parting with the car due to all the effort he has put into the car thus far but sadly the motor has seen better days.

Instead of re-doing piston rings and re-building the head I figure it would be cheaper and easier to source a sold engine with a long life left in its future.

If anyone has any leads I would love the help.

Thanks in advance.

Thumbs up

If he loves the car, he's better off rebuilding what he has...

Odds of finding a confirmed low mile motor are very slim and if you do, how do you know the oil and such was changed on a regular basis and the documents are real. Certainly the price will reflect...

What makes him believe the bottom end is gone? Top end can be done for sub $750 parts, rebuilt head, gaskets, bolts, etc. Figure the head is going to be $25-400 depending on where you go.

I have two M103s with 255-275k and they run great, until I have massive blowby or impossible starting I'll not rebuild. No reason to really.

Call Silver Star Recycling in Rancho Cordova.

I got a carfax verified 127k mile M103 for 580ish out the door, without shipping.

I'm in Sacramento, so I was able to just go over and pick it up.
