Post 240 D 4-spd manual transmission.

Automatic to Manual Conversion

This transmission and all the parts to do an automatic to manual conversion was pulled from a 1981 240D, mileage unknown. I have the transmission, clutch and pressure plate, shifter, linkage, clutch and brake pedal along with the clutch master and slave cylinder, as well as the clutch throw-out bearing. The standard Xmn mount for manual is also included. I have done one of these conversions on a 1983 300CDT, and believe me there is a difference. I also stuck a 5-cyl into a 240D sedan with a manual transmission. It is fairly time consuming, but a very viable conversion, and a worthy one.

I did not obtain it cheaply nor labor free so I cannot give it away. I have it advertised on our website at $450 and you can have it all for same. Additionally, send me your eMail address and I will send you a short article outlining the conversion.

Best, of course, if picked up in Knoxville, Tn, however, the transmission is not overly heavy and may be shipped via UPS, USPS or FedEx, whichever you prefer............... Thanks.

Note: I have been informed thru a process of pictures that this transmission is most likely an 82 model. Though it came from an 1981 year model Mercedes evidently installed the 82 transmissions into the year end models (can you follow that?). Anyway, the basic difference is two shift levers down and one up and a one piece housing. All the shift rods for the transmission are included so it will not make any difference into which unit it is installed. And besides, if you are converting a unit from automatic the shift rods will need to be shortened by cutting and welding.

Does your transmission have three shift arms pointing up or..... Two down and One up?

240D Manual Transmission

Has three shift arms. Two down, one up..... Year label on door post said 1981, but the transmission could have been changed at one time or another. I have no history on the vehicle. Only skinned knuckles.

Automatic to Manual Conversion

It is probably not necessary to cut the rods if the conversion is for a 240D. However, for the 300D the rods will have to be extended if the rods were removed from a 240D. And 300D manual transmissions are almost non existent unless the vehicle is an European version. Remember, they believe in diesels, we don't. Something like 51% of all vehicles in Europe are diesels. And automatic transmissions are less prevalent. We are a funny people. The answer to higher fuel mileage is right in front of us, but accept it we will not.

I would be interested in the flywheel, clutch and clutch disc if you would seperate them.

Automatic to Manual Conversion

Sorry, I do not intend to part it out. I purchased it for a conversion that I may still do. To sell parts would defeat the purpose. If you wish to pay the full $450 for just those parts they are yours, I know where there is a 1979, but I am not sure I would pull the parts for an even amount of money. .............. Thanks anyway.

Does anyone know if this transmission would work as a conversion on an 1985 300SD?

I have heard it will. The only part not interchangible directly is the pedal cluster and I have read here that it will work with a minor modification.

I'd be very interested in seeing the article on the auto-diesel conversion. I have a euro 300d with manual 5-spd that is rusting out, and an 83 300TD wagon with a shot engine. Maybe a transplant would be a good idea...

See the attached. This conversion was done to a 1983 300CD with a recently installed SD turbo engine. After driving it for about two years iIt is now happily in Texas.

Yes, it will work on a 1985 SD because that was the replacement engine in the 300CD for which the original conversion was done (see the attachment). All of the 5-cyl Mbz engines use the same mounting holes, i.e. the basic block is the same. As far as I know there was only two minor differences between the SD and S series. Electrical oil sending unit vs manual and a slight increase (0.5) in the compression ratio for 1985. There will also be a slight difference in the final drive ratio between all of the automatics and the manuals, but it is very small and hardly noticable.

I think BrewPeace was asking if your transmission will fit as a conversion in a W126 chassis.
