gaging interest in 70's-80's AMG 5 speed reproduction

I am working to create a custom bell similar to the AMG bell used to mate a getrag 265/262CR to a MB. the bell I am working on would work for MB motors with the starter on the passenger side. I could not repost pictures here as the forum would not let me repost the same pictures 2 times. look at this post for more details. I will need to get a commitment from 25 or so people to make this work. this bell will make a getrag 5 speed swap possible for pre 85 D's as well as SL's and SEC's once I have some quotes back I will repost with more detail. If you think this is something you might be interested in please email me at ----cobrajet at hotmail dot com---- and let me know. I think the price will end up around 500-700 for the bell depending on the number of people interested when the tool and first order is made. I hope to get it closer to the 500 side.

BTW, for those of you who remember the AMG front spoiler I was going to tool. I got serious replies from about 7 people. This made tooling it impossible. first the part was much more complicated than a standard airdam which increased tooling cost significantly, but lack of real interest made it too much of a gamble with my retirement funds. Not from lack of desire, but I could not ask 1000 dollars for a copy when I bought an original for $700, I hope this works out, I would love to get 5 speeds into some MB enthusiasts hands......

yes, I have found 2 in the last month at my pick and pull for $79 each. they are in 80-83 and 86 BMW's. easily identified by large nuts that hold the bell on.

ok, I'm interested. I might have a friend also interested. I'll search next time I'm at pick and pull.

What about shift linkages? Do you have a plan for those?

it is a rail shifter. Basically it is a rod that goes in and out and turns left and right. It is mounted on a sheetmetal bracket with a ball joint mounted to the sheetmetal. If you need it longer or shorter, simply extend or shorten the rod and the sheetmetal bracket. Looking at the one I have, it looks like it will be right for mine with no modification, but I will know more once I get it mounted to the engine. I will post a better picture this evening

Would this setup work in a 126? Mainly a 300SD?

you need to have a motor with the starter on the passenger side. I think the later motors had the starter on the driver side. that would be the deal breaker for this combination. But if you have the starter on the driver side you can use the readily available 5spd from a w201. the only challenge then will be the clutch pedal. But there are many aftermarket makers of pedals.

Tooling for transmission

Scott,
I didn't know what you are using the bell housing for until now.

I would be partially interested.

This proposed bellhousing will work on the OM61x series engine but not the OM60x due to the OM60x series has the starter wart on the drivers side

what specific model? I'm going junkyarding this weekend and if I can nab one now, might as well. Do they use the same form of attaching the drive shaft?

then if you get the 5 speed plus custom bell housing you would then need the clutch pedal and hydraulic junk, correct?

Partial interest wont get it done......

but if you want to get a trans for now pull the clutch release arm and the throwout bearing. If you leave them in the trans they dont charge for them. get the rubber mount and crossmember as well. I dont know if it will work but if you leave it attached they give it to you withthe trans.

My thoughts are to go to a hydraulic release bearing. There are some nice ones in the $130 range that will work. but I may be able to use the BMW arm so make sure you get it. The MB arm is too short, get the shifter too as there are many varieties and it will save you effort if you get the one that fits right away.

80-83 and 86 BMW 5,6 and 7 series, some jaguars and some volvos. best way to tell is look for the big nuts on the bolts holding on the bell housing. All of the other Bimmer 5spd trans are one piece cases, the 265 or the 262CR have seperate bolt on bells.

heres a picture of one fresh out of a bimmer with 125K and a picture of the shifter, it would be pretty easy to modify length, but My measureements say it will be very close to working unmodified

This should be posted on other forums and make sure everyone can see it. Try benzworld's 107,126 and 116 forums. It might help if you were able to secure some more 5 speed's, then people would be even more interested. Once my quarter is out, I'll go do some looking.

thanx, I think the material properties is the only foggy point. I am looking at A380 or A356 T6 any thoughts?

If it will work on an SEL, with AMG 6.0 motor, I'm in.

as long as the starter is on the passenger side it should not be a problem. The 265 was used on V12 Jags so it will be plenty strong enough
