What's up? 72 hits, no replies? Too much money? Let me know, gang. My original message was a no-****ter--I need to sell. I'm not looking for a windfall. Does $16,500 sound more reasonable? If not, can somebody tell me how to disconnect the front passenger air bag, so I can put my 3rd kid there... --Mitch

Mitch,

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! I AM JUST TELLING YOU WHAT I DID.

PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

In regards to the front passenger air bag, I did this on my 1992 400e at my wife's request.

To remove the air bag, it is VERY simple. If you look under the dash where the passenger airbag is, you will see a DEEP hole that has a 10mm bolt in it. Just remove the bolt and the entire passenger air bad assembly will come right out.

There are 2 firing mechanism for the air bag. The connectors just pop off. Each connector is a simple two pin connector. They kind of snap on, so removing it may take some slight force.

That's it. The passenger airbag is now non-operational.

Once the two cables are disconnected, turn on the car and the SRS warning light should come on.

To get rid of the warning light, I measured the resistance across each of the air bag mechanism. A quick run to Radio Shack for 2 pots with the same resistance range. I set each pot to the correct resistance value and connected the pots to the connectors so it appeared as if the air bags were still connected and sure enough, the SRS light went out.

I disconnected the battery for a few minutes just to erase any possible stored codes.

That's it. This was one of the first things I did when I got my 400e. So far no problems.

Hope this provides you with the information you are looking for.

Again, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!

-David

Hey cuz, I'd like to disable the front airbag as well on our 1993 500E.

Did you happen to remember the resistance range for the ASR connector?

Any thoughts about replacing the bag with a glove-compartment?

:-) neil

Hey, I might be interested in swapping a glove compartment for a passenger side airbag...

Bill- if only it was that easy to swap an airbag into the glove-compartment. . .

I was reading up on the electronics and logic, and it is NOT tied into the driver's side logic or sensors (senses acceleration, seat-belts engaged, not engaged, etc.).

Good luck,

:-) neil

Hey, I've got an idea! Why doesn't somebody withOUT 3 kids just buy my car or trade me for a late model suburban. Then we don't have to worry about all the airbag stuff!

OK, I'll trade you my '92 300E, 41,000 miles (only!), like brand new: NO PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG! Mamma would LOVE that 4.2...

How 'bout $15,500--truly an absolutely gorgeous car, but I'm not getting many phone calls (at least, not many "serious" phone calls; i.e., people who know MBZ). Can't go much lower. If can't sell, then I guess I'll just disable the airbag... --Mitch
