I have an extra Snap-On diagnostic scanner for sale, with cables & software for Mercedes through 2003. Despite claims to the contrary, the older "OBD-1" LH and HFM injection systems do have a lot of data available, including live data (engine running, or driving), and live actuator tests. This kit will also work on newer MB models with ME injection... although if you only have ME cars (most 1997-up), there are cheaper solutions available such as Carsoft.
(Please note that Carsoft is entirely useless for models with LH or HFM injection - it will only show blink codes, if that. I tried it - trust me, it's awful on LH or HFM cars.) The Snap-On kit will only communicate with the major vehicle systems, so an impulse counter (LED blinker box) type reader is still required for sub-systems (central locking, ACC, etc) and also ABS/ASR. But for most 1992-1996 Mercedes with either LH or HFM injection, this is an awesome setup.
Please see the attached PDF file which shows exactly what live data paramaters are available for LH & HFM. For each of these systems, the scanner will also communicate digitally. This means: (1) you don't have to wait for 30 seconds to read code #30 from an impulse counter (and another 30 + 8 to clear it afterwards!), and (2) the scanner will show the same multi-digit code that the dealership's Star SDS/DAS or HHT would display. See the attached screen shot... an impulse counter shows "code #2", which can mean 6 different things. The digital scanner would show (for example) "code #008", which narrows the options considerably. The scanner also does actuator tests, version coding, and adaptation. On newer models, it will also communicate with the computer modules for the transmission, airbag, climate control, ME injection through v2.8, SIM4 injection, and electronic diesel injection (to '99).
I also will include (if you want it) a complete DTC reference guide for the W124 (LH & HFM) and W140 (LH / V8 only), covering 1992-1995, so you can easily decipher the codes without digging through the WIS. And, I'll throw in a copy of the EPC and WIS if you don't already have it. The kit includes a hard-shell carry case, with documentation & manuals in PDF format on a CD. The system is fully configurable so it can work with BMW, VW, Audi, domestic, and Asian imports as well. It's also updateable for Mercedes support through 2007 models (requires buying updated software from Snap-On... but if your car is that new, it's probably under warranty anyway!).
In case you were wondering, this is the same scanner that I currently have and plan to keep using - I'm selling an extra setup. So no, I'm not ditching a tool I didn't like!
