WTB: 124 b-pillar plastic trim, palomino

I need at least the passenger side of this trim bit in palomino, if anyone has one in good condition. Mine has cracked, and the other side is cracking as well, which makes it crooked and messes up the entire b-pillar trim. It's the piece at the bottom, highlighted in yellow in the picture. If anyone has one side, or both, it would be much appreciated.

I'm going to the local Pick and/or Pull tomorrow. There are a couple of 124s but I disremember the interior colors, let me look. "Palomino" is what, off-white?

Palomino is kind of a rich tan ... here's a pic that kind of shows the color:

Sorry, Windsor has gray and black only and the gray ones will be hard to remove because the power seats are in the way. Still may be possible, see the following discussion of paint.

Wednesday I'll be in San Jose, will check there for Palomino.

FYI, I have had success painting with SEM plastic-coating paint. My experience has been in painting Palomino and Black with "Shadow Blue" but it might be possible to paint Gray with Palomino if that color is available from SEM. That gives you another option in case Palomino doesn't show up in a reasonable time frame.

Cool, thanks! Painting would probably actually work fine, especially since that part of the trim isn't particularly visible or in a brightly lit area. Let me know if you see any palomino ones in San Jose, though, since that would be easier.

If I can't find Palomino in San Jose Wednesday, and if you haven't come up with anything better in the meantime, I'll go back to Windsor and see if I can get either gray set out of the cars without damage. BTW, it's likely that even the black ones would paint up OK, especially if you put a coat of gray primer on first and then the Palomino.

I have a number of things in my '87 painted with SEM, including the dash (was black) and a vinyl patch on the seat (was clear) and a left mirror control trim panel (was Palomino). Although I can testify only for "Shadow Blue," SEM's color matching is surprisingly good.

The gray or black ones would be fine if they look solid. Probably wouldn't hurt to have some palomino paint on hand anyway ... there are some other bits in my car that could use freshening up. Thanks!

Everything in San Jose was black or gray. Let me try to get back to Windsor in the next few days.

Cool. No rush, I appreciate it. I'll try to order some paint.

OK, got two sets. Need to take a picture and post it for you to see and make a choice of which pair you want. Will explain why you have to make a decision.

Cool ... I might grab one of your outside temp displays as well. Would they work in the MY87?

All 124 temp displays will work in your '87. The later ones ('90-on?) require a 5-pin connector however, as the speed signal was added. A simple upgrade.

The displays are interchangeable across the 124 model line (did 201s get them too?) except that 1987 has a 4-pin plug and the later models have a 5-pin plug. It's an easy change, no soldering, you just take the plugs apart and put the wires from your harness into the 5-pin plug. I supply directions with the display and plug. The plug comes with about 6 inches of wire (I cut off as much as I could get when I pulled them). I have a later-model display in my '87.

You can even leave the 5th wire in the plug and attach it to the speed sensor (green wire) behind the instrument cluster. The purpose is to freeze the display when you are not moving, otherwise the temperature climbs and climbs due to engine heat, pavement heat, etc. When you start moving again, the display "wakes up." It is an optional connection; the display works fine without that 5th wire.

Trim

OK, here's the story and the photos and the choice....

I got a black pair and a gray pair of B-pillar base trim panels. Both are in good condition with no cracks, chips, etc. The black pair was made in 1987 and the gray pair in 1989. Part numbers are 124 692 03 22 (left) and 124 692 04 22 (right).

The gray pair would probably take Palomino paint better but one of the gray panels has the screws stuck in it as if someone used a power screwdriver and pushed 'em in so hard that they melted the plastic. I tried to get the screws out but didn't want to force the issue and break off the extrusion. See the pictures.

Personally, I would choose the black pair and put a coat of gray primer on them before the Palomino. You could also experiment with Palomino directly on the plastic (do it on the inside where it won't show). The choice is yours. Either pair, $20 including shipping and PayPal fee (should you choose to go that way). PM me for my PayPal ID or my mailing address if you want to send a check.

If you want the temp display too, that's another $30 or $50 total.
