87 300D differential
 

I'm looking for a good used differential for my 87 300D The MB part number is 124 351 25 08.

Any information would be appreciated.

I am in Racine Wisconsin and have a 90 300E 124 that I am parting out.

That model is interchangable? Not questioning your knowledge, just curious.

What would the price be? Is it in good shape?

It is the same chassis, so it will bolt up. The gear ratio may be different.
If you remove $75.00. Add 35 if you want me to remove.

I drove the car 1 winter and it drove fine. I bought it because it was a rust free southern car and has many good parts for my 87 300D.
i will see if the gear ratios are in any of my books tomorrow.

I don't know enough about it to know what a different ratio would do one way or another.

I'm open to ideas or alternatives.

The '87 is 2.65:1, I think that the '90 is also but someone on the diesel forum with a '90 will know for sure.

Let me know if the '90 doesn't work out.

I looked it up in the E class owners bible.
Here is what I found

87 300D sedan 2.65
87 300TD wagon 3.07
90 300E 3.07

If you put a 3.07 rearend in you would probably have a bit more pickup off the line to about 45 mph. Your speedometer would be about 10%.
You could change the speed sensor off the transmission along with the rear axle and that should make it accurate.

If you wish to keep the 2.65 ratio it can come off a 124 E320 or any year diesel sedan, 3.0 or 2.5.

If you have an "E-Class Owner's Bible", do with it what I do, use it for pounding on things that you don't want to mark, it makes a decent work-bench pad.

Other than that, I have found it to be mostly useless, and often incorrect, enough that you don't know what to trust and what not, ... like going to a Doctor who is often incorrect.

The '87 300D and '87 300TD both had a 2.65:1 ratio.

I didn't realize Wodnek's car is a gasser, and I believe that the "bible" is correct there as the early 300E had a 3.07 and it is likely that the '90 did also. The '94/'95 E320 is 2.65:1 as Wodnek also mentions.

A 3.07:1 gasser rear screw should give a 300D quite a bit of punch off the line.

I am not sure if you are correct about the wagon rear ratio. My wagon turns about 200 more rpms on the highway than my sedan at 75mph. It is also quicker ffrom zero to 45 than my sedan. My sedan really turns on past 45 though.

I could be wrong, but all three pieces of factory 1987 literature on my desk say 2.65:1 on all '87 124 turbodiesels, wagon and sedan. The wagon is also 1.1second slower 0-55 than the sedan (9.8seconds vs the sedan's 8.7seconds).

Len, I 've got one... 2.87 ratio from a W124. Believe it’s from a diesel due to the ratio. Can be installed in a 190D/190E W201 if external parts are swapped. I purchased it a few years ago for my 87 300E but the project went in another direction (got a 5 spd. instead). It’s been sitting in the shop taking up space ever since. It has the ABS sensor. This is not for ASR vehicles unless you modify. It has the exact same flanges, pinion yoke, and mounting as found in an 87 300E, just different ratio. $80 delivered to your door in the 48USA, Paypal or postal money order.
