Does it have to be factory or can it be aftermarket?

You can buy a brand new one at your local MB dealer for like $10-15.....

Considering she could lose $15 worth of diesel driving without a cap, I'd say the dealer sounds like the best bet. Quick and cheap.

You might also be able to find one at your local auto parts store or the junkyard too.

Are they the same as the metal oil caps? Mine look similar, but I never tried swapping them.
Around these parts, I'd only expect specialized parts stores would carry them. A relatively long drive for me. So the MB dealer in downtown SLC is closer. When I've done the same thing, I find stuffing a clean shop towel in the spout, helps mitigate the spillage.
