WTB: 190D 2.2l 5spd Differential

Hey all,

The diff in my '85 190D 2.2l 5spd makes a huge amount of noise. Its actually a replacement diff (the other one was actually not quite as bad) and its driving me crazy...
I'd bought this replacement from "Sports and Imports" in Georgia, it was a great price but...

So I'm looking for a replacement, AFAIK its got to be from an '84 - '85 2.2l 190D, I *think* the manual and auto were the same. I also think the early 190E 2.3l would work although it'll be a slightly lower ratio.

Alternately if anybody knows somebody who has the wherewithal to rebuild an MB diff drop me a note, I'd actually prefer to have mine rebuilt and then know its good...

Thanks

Curt

I have a 5 speed differential out of an 85 190E 2.3. No noises and no whining. It has 119k miles on it.

PM me if you're interested. I'm not really asking for a boat load either. I've sold a 2.88 differential to a member here and AFAIK, he's happy.

Do you know what the ratio of that diff is?
AFAIK 3.42 is normal for a 2.2l 5spd, supposedly an '84 190E has 3.46, I don't think there'll be much issue, the difference is pretty small.

Just crawled under the car and it's a 3.23. I don't know, it seems like a good trade off for your diesel; lower RPMs at speed and a little boost in MPG.

Hmm, I'll have to have a think about that. I'm one of those who doesn't think RPMs make a big difference in fuel economy in a diesel.
5th gear in a 2.2l 190D is highway only and only above 65mph, I wouldn't mind going lower in gearing but taller gears are gonna eat up all my get up and go... We're not talking about a seriously quick car anyway.

Well, for a highway car, who's gunna need get up and go? That on ramp might be a little tricky with the 0-60 time being 20 years, but it'll still go and it'll go a few yards farther. It depends on the driver. Not too big of a difference in initial acceleration. You may not be able to do a wheel hop start as much as with the 3.46, but the 3.23 still moves the car along quite nicely. It's all up to what you want and how you want things done. I just have a differential lying around.

I guess it'd be like a 240D but without the low end torque (the 616 is much torquier than the 601, I've got both...) ahhh, I dunno, I want the hassle over but...

I'll keep you in mind, I'm just winding up into high gear looking for this thing...

Not a problem. I'm sure you'll find the 3.46. They can't be too hard to find, right?

Good luck Curt,
Allen

I'd even take a 3.42... Unfortunately I think I'm limited to an '84-'85 190D 2.2l or '84 190E 2.3l...
