reduced! 5 spd conversion or whole car 1986 190D 2.5

All (except for the flywheel) parts for a 5 spd transmission swap available. They are still in the car so you can drive before buying. Its the factory stock setup from a 1986 W201 chassis 190D 2.5 and will include trans, linkage, shifter, clutch, pressure plate, T/O bearing, crossmember, driveshaft, pedal cluster, master and slave cylinders, hard and soft lines. If the console wood is unique to the 5 spd then its also included. $975 includes delivery to your door in the 48USA.

Drivetrain has 295K on it and the car needs more attention than I'm willing to give it. I've owned it for 19 years. Engine runs strong but will need a headgasket soon, plus body has normal jackpoint rust in the rockers and needs paint. Entire car for $2400 if anyone is interested. Has Sachs lowering springs, 1 year old Yokohamas, euro lights, recent CCU, vacuum switch, pods, etc. Exterior is faded silver, interior is Blue tex.

Edit: Pictures now below
FEB 15 edit: Price reduced to $1600. Drive it home!
3/15 Edit: SOLD

Talking

Did this go into a car that previously had an automatic? If so then the crankshaft probably has the opening for the pilot bearing. Does delivery include installation assistance?

This car was factory delivered with the 5 spd. The salvage engine that was installed a long time ago came with an automatic, but also had hole in the crankshaft for the pilot bearing.

Delivered is via UPS, ask their driver for assistance . If you want me to help, then we need some serious negotiation

I'm not sure what direction its going to take....if someone wants the conversion kit then I'll part the rest of it. If no action as-is then I'll pop a headgasket in and sell complete. Ideally somone who wants the 5 spd bits will drive it home, part the rest of it and get their 5 spd for free. Either way its going to go.

My wife looks dimly on another project of parting out a car. I currently have an '87 190d 2.5 with an automatic with a problem (also has 233,000+ miles on it) Seems to me that a 5 speed stick s a better option than a more expensive rebuild. How many hours would you estimate it taking?

Thanks, Juergen

Thumbs up

I’d estimate 2 weekends would have you up and running, less if you have help or have done it before. It’s all intelligent grunt work….no fabrication or welding, just a lot of remove and replace. Exhaust gets disconnected at the manifold so that engine can be tilted to get at the trans bolts, plus maybe dropped further back to allow access for the driveshaft changeout (some say front part only). You can find the major R&R in an online service manual. I did my 300E on jackstands and borrowed a transmission jack. Time sucker is doing the pedal cluster and clutch lines. They all fit in factory locations so it’s easy to install, just awkward. Let me know if interested, I could have the conversion kit (less flywheel as stated above) ready to ship in about a week (working part time evenings). I took pictures for someone today, its a nice little car and could really stand out after a full detail. Don't let the picture fool you... it will still need paint and attention to the rockers. And it's still gotta go.

Thumbs up

AC was working this August, unsure as to how to test it now beyond saying that compressor turns on at this season's temperatures. It still runs R12, plus last year it got a rebuilt CCU, vacuum valve set, and the vacuum pod (w/rheostat) under the middle of the dash. All that works and directs air as it should. If anyone is interested and knows how to test the AC cooling when its cold outside, I'm willing to do it.

let's bump this, also add that the shifter is a "short shifter" as modified by MRP. No wrenching on cars today, there's 2 feet (!) of snow here. Did pick up a non-running John Deere snowblower for cheap, cleaned up the fuel system and let it rip. Great satisfaction seeing the white stuff move by internal combustion rather than my back.
