WTT/WTB: Plain W124 door handles
My 95 E300D has the door handles with the stainless trim, and I really prefer the unadorned flat grey door handles. Is anyone interested in trading me their plain door handles for my 'fancy' ones?
I'm also interested in purchasing the old-style handles if no one wants to trade. Let's figure something out!

I have a set of 4 from a 1992 400E I'm parting. I think they are plain (car not here to check). $23 for all 4 delivered in the contUSA. If interested I 'll take a look tomorrow.

The later model W124's most probably had the chrome accent. Earlier ones did not.

The 1990 freshening used the new style handles.
I recall that the front door lock cylinders presented a problem. Jim

You will want the aluminum casting that the handles fit in also, there is a difference in the width of the ears on the plastic, later are wider. You can modify the later handles by trimming the ears, but I'd imagine that the early ones in a later casting would feel sloppy.

Bummer sauce all around. My locks definitely have the stripe, and I definitely don't want it there. Does anyone know if the aluminum mounting block is exchangeable between pre/post facelift models?

Hm. Looked at the FSM page about it, and it does look like if I want plain door handles, I'm going to have to replace the whole shebang.

I have complete doors off of my donor car, let me know. I'd be happy to trade.

It's a pretty easy swap really, except for the lock parts as the cylinder needs to be pulled and that's a bit tedious (can be done).
Remove the lock or blank via the set-screw in the door-jamb behind the plug. Move the blank or lock rearward, slide out. With the lock you need to turn the key 45* CCW (might be CW I don't remember for sure). It can be done without the key, but not easily as IIRC the door needs to have the latch mechanism un-mounted first. After that, the handle sliides rearward, pulls out. Next remove the three screws that the handle hid, and the alumium part comes out from the back side. Look the aluminum part over, there is a plastic piece in it that sometimes fractures and causes hard opening of the door.
