Junkyard finds; N Indiana / S Michigan
I have been slow this past week, and have been cruising some of the "local" self-serve yards.
LKQ in Dorr, MI 1 190D 2.2 automatic, fairly complete 1 190E, fairly complete LKQ in Holland, MI 1 1992 190E condition unknown 1 1991 300E condition unknown LKQ in Kalamazoo, MI 1 1990-ish 190E fairly complete 1 1986 300E fairly complete LKQ in South Bend, IN 1 560SEL missing many parts 3 190E ('85/'89/'88 IIRC) various but fairly complete 1 300E missing many parts 1 300D/123 1981 engine complete missing some interior 1 1972-1974 280SE (from what the buyer could remember) not yet in the yard, purchased today. Says complete non-running, trim very good and body little rust. Pick A Part in Fort Wayne, IN 3 420SEL ('86, 87, 89) from complete to missing some parts 2 300E ('86 & '89) missing some parts 1 190E 1991 fairly complete (just crushed a fintail ) The Pick A Part in FW, IN is new just 3 months ago, and seems undiscovered by M-B people. He is at a point where he needs to crush cars that are not being picked at, so I'm hoping that the Mercedes cars will start to get some action, which will prompt him to keep them a little longer, and buy more M-Bs. The LKQ in South Bend is also new (end of 2010), buys a lot of cars from the Chicago area, so I'm hoping that he will also see value in buying Mercedes cars. As things are slow lately, I could entertain pulling parts for other forum members, but the prospect of shipping large parts doesn't appeal to me.

Just picked up my son at Fort Wayne airport today (back from Iraq a few weeks ago!!)--noticed the Pick-a-Part billboard on US 30 and didn't recall it being there before.
Where is the LKQ in South Bend? I think Veldman's (west of SB) has a few W203 cars, but not much else. Next time you head up to Holland/K-Zoo try Auto Sports Unlimited in Zeeland, MI. Usually a handful of 126's and good people to deal with (they've refunded/replaced a few things based on my phone call that they were DOA--no need to return. Honest and fair, i like that.) Thanks for the update.

I used to spend some time at Auto Sports Unlimited, was just around the corner from my office (Gentex). Scott buys some interesting wrecks and rebuildables.
Is Veldman's a self-serve? I'm interested in any self-serve yards, the full-serve are usually too expensive and half of the fun (for me) is walking among all of the cars and in some cases, removing the parts myself.

I don't think Veldman's is self-serve. The few times they've had something i needed, i was busy enough to have them ship it the 18 miles (before fuel surcharges!!) When i take my son back to FW on the 15th i may take a few tools and swing by the Pick-a-Part. Need a set of aluminum rims for my wife's xB--there's about a hundred cars i could use (5 on 4.5, stock is 16 x 6.5, with an ET of like 40 or 45--ton of choices)
Have a great weekend.
