WTB: W124 3.27,3.29,3.07 differential

I currently have a 1995 E300D with a 2.87 diff. i will be installing a 5 speed soon, and will need to change the diff, so it is not as tall.

i am looking for any diffs that will fit a w124 that is from 3.07 to 3.29.

cheers

Pretty sure the '95 E300D uses the smaller 185mm diff, not the larger 210mm diff.

I have a 3.07 185mm diff from a 300CE, had 100k miles on it.

I have a diff from a 190e 16v. I bought it for the limited slip feature and took that out of it and put in my 123 autocrosser. What I have left is the parts to build up a diff without limited slip in the 16v ratio. It is 3.27. I can have my favorite machinist assemble it with the used parts or if you like we could assemble it with new bearings. I would recommend using at least new seals and gaskets but if you want something down and dirty cheap we could probably simply use the parts I have left over. I suppose $100 plus the cost of any new parts you would like to have installed would get it done.

i appreciate all the responses.

David,

how can i check to see the size of the diff. without actually measuring something, will epc or some chart tell me what i need to get in terms of replacement size?

T Walgamuth,

this is going into a pristine E300d with 36k on it (a showroom ready). i am not looking to safe a few bucks, but make this a lasting swap that will take both of us into the next decade. so i would want all seals and bearings replaced.
As i am typing this, i do recall reading a thread that mentioned that the 190e 16V had a larger diff, so David above comments are making more sense.

I will get back to you both, once i have done more research. Cheers

Differential drive flange to drive flange measurements:
201 open diff: 22.5cm
201 (16V) LSD: 24cm
201 ASD : 28.5cm
124 open diff: 24cm
124 ASD : 28.5cm
Easy Swaps:
Any 201 open diff into a non-LSD/ASD201 = YES
16V LSD w/half shafts/rear prop shaft into any 201 = YES
201 ASD w/half shafts/rear prop shaft into any 201 = YES
124 open diff into a 16V after changing rear cover = YES
201 (16V) LSD into a 124 using 124 half shafts = YES

David you are correct, i have a 185mm diff and the W201 16v also is this size (larger than a standard w201).
i guess i need to decide what ratio i will ultimately want for my swap. i will have to get a diff calculator to see what end result RPMs i am looking for.

You don't HAVE to change the diff.

If you are changing the diff you have to change your instrument cluster.

Right, i can make it work, but to make the car fun and driveable in most conditions (city/highway), having the proper ratio is important.

i might just do the swap, live it with until i can get the parts together for the diff swap.
