I may be wrong but I don't think a 190 trans will bolt up to a 617.

You are right starter is on the other side

You are correct. The starter would end up on the wrong side. The starter needs to be on the right side - passenger side. The Getrag 717.400 is the direct bolt on 5 speed for the OM617.9XX. Very rare and very difficult to find. The smaller end of the drive shaft is unique as well as the trans cross member, 5 speed shifter, linkage, flywheel, and a few other odds and ends. Be prepared to wait to find one and then be prepared to pay a decent price.
