I have a drive shaft off an old 280E manual and the 4 speed. Would this flywheel let me use the 5 cylinder NA engine in my 240?

yes. you can run the 240 fw but the 300 is sweeter. It will make shifting smoother and the idle will feel like a six cylinder.

Congratulations!

Considering the amount of chat there is on this forum (and many others) of people saying they want / need / bleed for heavy manual gearbox OM617 flywheels you would have thought this would have been snapped up long ago along with your 5 speed cross member. This is one of the reasons why I am less inclined to believe people who contact me to see if I could pluck one for them from the nearest apple tree!

Those are not really necessary are they? I see no problems with the 240D flywheel I'm using with OM617.952 engine in a 300TD with 4 speed manual.

To be honest I don't really know - some say yes - some say no. I've never driven a turbo OM617 with a manual gearbox before so I'm not really the person to ask.

Some say the revs die fast and you have to get used to driving it that way - some people still put up with Microsoft products and wait half their lives for yet another update to install - some would say that Mercedes made it heavier for a reason...

...if you're happy with the 240D flywheel then you've saved a whole load of cash and trouble finding the heavier version. If I were to be doing this swap and I couldn't find the heavier flywheel I'd definitely try the 240D version first. I have a sneaky feeling though that with my Grand Dad style of driving I'd be irritated by it - for me the main benefit of a diesel engine is the low revving relaxed driving style it encourages; if I wanted something stressy and peppy I'd go for a turbo bandit M104 with a 722.3!

We have pick n pull here, a network of yards where you pull the parts yourself from older cars.

On a 50% sale day I got:

From a 240D ... 4 spd manual, shifter mechanism with rods, flywheel, clutch pressure and friction, pedals, clutch master and slave, rear trans mount crossmember and driveshaft for less than $300.

I wouldn't go to huge effort to find a heavier flywheel. 617s were not imported to the states with manual trans so they are rare.

The flywheel is quite rare. The lighter one from a 4 cylinder seems to have "buzzy" vibration issues at some lower rpms when mated to the 617 engine. As Tom reported the heavier flywheel is smooth. It was I who pulled this flywheel from a euro w123 617 along with the entire transmission/driveshaft. I sold the rest separately.
