Wanted: 560 Euro Block
Have been looking for a 560 SL/SEL/SEC Euro used engine block. I have very few leads on how to obtain one of these. I know of a guy who bought one, but brand new for $6500... a little steep for me. Anyone in Euro-Land know about us Americans importing one of these? Anyone here in the U.S with info on a 560 Euro block, please post anything related to it!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Mine is starting to smoke a bit (valve job), but mainly its because I want to transplant the motor into my 190E. The 3.8 in that car is getting tired. It had a lot of miles when I put it in (150K) and all of them were hard driven, track, drag strip, maniac owner, etc. A 560 US block would be fine but I like the power numbers and the fact that it would keep the car all Euro.

You put a 3.8 M116 V8 into a 190E? Very cool, is it fast?

It coule be very fast but I'm having trouble getting traction. I'm looking for an lsd differential from a 16-valve to help correct it. I fitted the 380 motor with an intake from a 420 motor and the exhaust is all free flow so it should be making around 225hp since stock numbers put it at 218hp. I'll let you know what it runs in the quarter mile when I get the differential. Right now it runs high 14's, low 15's when the tires stick about 20 feet down the track!

What is the difference between the euro block and a US block?
I may have a 560 block for sale, however it is a US block, I think. How do I tell?

Euro blocks have higher compression and were made for not-as-strict emissions laws. The Euro 560 makes about 300hp and the U.S., while listed at 238hp, is probably closer to 270 I've heard with a bunch of torque. I may still be interested in your 560 block since the euro is so hard to find. Send me an e-mail and let me know mileage and cost if you are still selling.

Maybe this?

Compression is different
Euro 117.968 blocks are 10:1 compression vs. 9.0:1 compression. They have identical heads and cams but different pistons. Without catalysts, the 560 Euro motor makes 300hp and 335ft/lbs of torque (as opposed to 238hp and 279ft/lbs of torque for the U.S. version).

Not an easy swap, right?
Satish-
It is not logical to buy custom pistons made to the 560 Euro spec pistons and fit them to my U.S 560 block because each block is a little different, right? A mechanic said since each block most likely is bored by different machines it may involve rebalancing and getting custom sleeves for the pistons since the bores could be a few hundredths different from another block. Since the pistons would be custom forged, they would be lighter than OEM pistons from a 560 Euro, involving the balance issue. I had this great idea when you said its only the pistons but since more people have not just bought a set of custom pistons for $700, its probably not that easy. Can you confirm this?

Definitely the easiest way to go is to fit euro pistons to your existing block. From what I can tell there is no difference between the blocks that would account for the power difference, it is all in the compression and cams. If you are fitting new pistons you have to have the engine bored which will ensure that everything fits okay.

The cams from 1986-1991 M117.968 models are the same between Euro and U.S. blocks. ONLY the 10:1 compression in Europe vs. 9.0:1 in the U.S. After 1987, anti-knock sensors were available in Europe for the Euro EZL. However, you can still use the U.S. CIS-E brain and EZL with a Euro motor.
