I think I killed the gears when I pressed the reset of the daytrip meter during driving. Does this affect the same gear set?

Yes, you probably effected it that way.

DO NOT press the trip reset while the car is moving. It WILL slowly wear the main drive spur gear's grip on the shaft out.

if my memory is correct

The 300SDL odometer is not so simple to fix. It's electronic with a pickup and electromagnet, etc. I sent Coda's off to this place to have repaired:

Speedometer & Odometer Repairs Overseas Speedometer

Great customer service, too.

My 2 126's, 85 300SD and 82 500 euro SEC, physically release the odo gears from the speedo drive gear when the rest button is pushed ... ergo, pushing the odo reset under any circumstances like driving, coasting, reverseing, talking on the cell phone, etc will not cause the odo gears to break. This is an old tale repeated by people who do not have a clue about how the speedo/odo works.
The gears are relatively easy to replace, provided you have some DIY ability, and available as other posters have stated. Do a search if you don't know how to remove the instrument cluster with a bent coat hanger and then access the gears with a couple of screw drivers.

Thanks , my SDL odometer stopped working after I was pressing the reset during driving. Therefore I was assuming there was a connection?
Well. I'll need to take the cluster out- easy- I have done this several times. I usually remove the speaker in the dash (left side) and push from behind. Then the cluster pops out easily.
I hope it is just a couple of damaged gears.

I think what usually happens is the odo stopped working but you don't notice it until you push the rest. I had your same experience but on looking at the mechanism I saw that it did not happen the way I thought it did. There are 3 gears that need to be changed. The above mentioned site sells all 3.

I replaced the 3 gears with the product you recommended. The guys were helpful.... odometer works now again but....
it started making this ticking noise. It is very loud and I can hear it all the time unless I turn the stereo on. I don't understand why the ticking noise is so loud now and was not before.
Does anyone have a cure for this problem of the pulse or ticking noise?
