I've got one out of a 83 300sd, w126. I've heard and read that this will work in a w123.

If only. No, the w126 (SD) steering box will not work in a w123. The mounting bolt pattern is different.

To the OP, I recondition steering boxes. If you want one I sell them for $135 +$45 core charge.

Even if you don't buy one from me I'd still love to buy your old box from you. I'm still in desperate need of cores and even sloppy boxes can usually be reconditioned into decent boxes.

I got a very nice one for $40.00 plus shipping. It has been on the market for a while. Check out the thread / post. Plenty of pictures.

If I can get the Pitman Arm off, it will fit flat rate large box. Let me know.

Well, I've been told the 1st edition w126 will. The 2nd edition will not.
I don't know for a fact though.

Out of the w126 boxes I've done I don't see a difference in mounting holes. The difference in the two boxes is the pitch of the ball bearing screw.

I'm about 99% sure.

As far as I know, the W126 boxes are interchangeable with all W126s and none will work on the W123. I have done some reading on the subject in the past. You will need a W123 box because the bolt pattern is different.
