ISO: General parts for '87 300D - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I'm going to be picking up an '87 300d later tonight that will need some items.

1. Both front turn signals
2. DS headlight door
3. Dash vent for far right side (passenger side)- not broken
4. Possibly a full complete exhaust system in good, non rusted through shape. The one currently on the car is fairly rusty and is leaking everywhere.
5. A/T shifter, would like a nice leather one but standard plastic is fine.

I don't have a whole lot of $ to work with but I'm also not in a rush to buy parts. If I have to wait for afford the exhaust I don't have a problem with that. Just would like to get something lined up.

P.S. This car still has the original trap oxidizer in place. Does anyone know from recent personal experience(s) whether the removal of this would still be covered by the factory recall at no cost to me (after so many years)??? Thanks

Drive that puppy right into the dealership after you get the title. Could include anything up to a new head.

For the lenses any 124 will work. The two tones are a nice upgrade IMO.

When I finally picked it up I considered possibly just making it a parts car (cause appearance wise it is quite rough) and use front end parts to fix up the '92 that was just wrecked but I hate taking these cars off the road. The car runs and drives and drove quite nice at 75 going home so I'm going to try and fix it and keep it on the road (maybe as a beater) longer if possible. Already ordered some parts here that I've noted will be needed.

The hardest thing will be finding an exhaust system. I can't spend big bucks on new so if anyone has (or knows) of a '87 300D with a fairly sound (rust free) exhaust, at a decent price, please let me know. I will most likely need to replace the current one before it will pass emissions (leaks everywhere!)

I've got an 87 300D parts car with a good exhaust, and I've got a good maroon Tex seat sitting in the shed... Price would be fairly cheap.

Just got to figure out how the parts get from here to you.........

When the dealership replaces the trap oxidizer, I thought they replaced the entire exhaust system with it.

Should you not get any joy at the dealership, I have everything you need, but I hate shipping old exhaust parts. I know I have the resonator & rear muffler, not sure about the front pipe.

I MAY have a oxidizer replacement pipe if the dealer gives you the cold shoulder.
I have the two turn signals, I have the drivers headlight door, I have some old headlight wipers to fill in the holes under the headlights. I also have a front license plate bracket if your state needs a front plate, or a whole bumper if you are feeling rich.

I have a shifter, and I have some radios. Genuine becker or a decent aftermarket.

I'd be interested to know what you'd like for the exhaust (and if it 's a complete full exhaust) and ideas on shipping with approximate cost. VA is closer to TN so yours may be the better route to go. The seat would be nice but $$ at this time probably won't allow me to do it at this time with the additional shipping expenses. Let me know what you can come up with. Thanks!

If the dealer replaces the exhaust on the car that would be awesome! However, I'm skeptical that it will pass the emissions down here with all the leaks in order for me to register it and get my title then go to the dealer. So even if I spend a little to get a used exhaust on it I don't mind. I'd be interested in prices for all your items and I can pick some items. I may go with JimFreeh's exhaust if he can figure shipping out since it's closer and would most likely cost less to ship. Thanks!

Amazing, seeing a car like that with the Nasty Trap Oxidizer still on it!
Its the same color as the one my wife wrecked last year. I still have my other '87 300D and love it!
I would squirt some high temp RTV silicone into any cracks where the exhaust leaks are. If the emissions people give you any problem try explaining to them you need a title to have the dealer replace the exhaust under their "factory campaign" ie. warranty.
My Blue '87 came with a cracked head and the NTO still in place. I got it running (it barely made power because the NTO was mostly plugged up) called the dealer, made an appointment and they replaced the trap with a new down pipe and complete exhaust at no cost.
My head was fine (I had just put on a rebuilt head because the car came without it as part of a Mechanics Lien sale ($475). Still running great on that #14 head.

When I got mine inspected I was told it was emissions exempt since it's over 25 years old. This is in a different state of course..

Man I'd put so much putty in that exhaust to get it to pass, more than the women use on those reality shows...

Interesting! Can you clarify on the 'barely made power' part? Are you referring to extremely sluggish pickup? If so, this may explain why this car is EXTREMELY slow at first. Seriously, I think it took me 30-40 seconds just to get to 40MPH. After that though it drove fine, got it to 75 on the interstate perfect, not bad for a $600 car

I didn't locate all the holes when I first looked at it since it was 10* outside but did notice the muffler was rusted out and at least 2 more leaks in each the front pipe area and resonator area because I saw the exhaust leaking out while engine was running.

Barely Made Power = hardly able to move. It was a SLUG! I was able to get the engine to run better by removing the large cap nut on the front of the exhaust manifold where it was placed for testing the back pressure. The FSM for the OM 603.960 shows how its done, with a special factory pressure gauge made to take the exhaust gas

One might wonder why would the factory show how to check the exhaust back pressure in the first place? Perhaps someone predicted the NTO could or would get plugged up! MB must have realized their mistake because they have spent several hundred thousand USD replacing the NTO and related exhaust components and in some cases they replaced the cylinder heads, maybe even a few complete engines under the Service Campaign.

There was a member who had a 300D up in Maine as I recall., It was really sluggish and they removed that cap plug as I described and the car would run better, so it was off to the mechanic to drop the NTO which made it an operable car. The owner had not been running the car very far, just a short drive and never really getting the car up to 4th gear, so the theory was raised out that the NTO matrix, which is a dense ceramic core with tiny passways coated with platinum I believe, never got hot enough to burn off or catalyze the carbon byproducts of a slow running diesel which can load up and cause restriction to the exhaust flow. In other words the engine chokes up and and it gets really sluggish.
In my case the car would hardly run! It wouldn't idle at all, I had to keep the pedal mashed or it would die.
Imagine the feeling after putting on a newly remanufactured cylinder head, new timing chain, new water pump, new cylinder rings and cleaning out the intake manifold that was half plugged up with crud, filling the crankcase with clean oil and finally starting it up only to find it would hardly get out of the garage even with the accelerator floored!

I recall the sinking feeling in my stomach after I had poured a bunch of money and labor into my car. then the realization set in that it would hardly even run!
Fortunately I had access to a lift at a garage where I used to work part time and the very generous owner let me use one of his lifts and his European trained mechanic helped me extensively. Re-ringing the pistons was a real experience!

Hopefully you will be able to get that car running enough to have the dealer replace the NTO and be on its way, the '87 turbo will really run well and handle like a sports car, well that is if you throw a few $$$ into a Sportline suspension it will take corners flat and surprise those big SUV drivers when you pass them on curves

Having owned a 1987 300TD and participated in the replacement program years ago...... My recollection is that only the station wagon got the full exhaust. The sedan only got a partial, forward section.

I can get the exhaust and any other parts as far as the Greeneville, SC area if you'd feel like picking them up there. Price is cheep!
