I need a replacement 1988 190D transmission.

I need a replacement transmission for my 1988 190D (201 chassis). Water got in the trans fluid (Seems there was a slow leak between transmission cooler and radiator). After slipping for several weeks it eventually wouldn't move. I flushed all the watery fluid out and I have bypassed the leaky transmisson cooler with a replacement, put in new fluid. So now it drives if really pressing the accelerator far and barely works in reverse. Apparently I did some irreversible damage by not addressing the problem early on.

Yep that'll do it.

It is incredibly difficult to remove water from a transmission - your attempts at flushing are unlikely to have removed most of it. A water / oil emulsion will have formed and will have stuck itself to all of the internal components - it will now be rusting any steel parts and trapping any dirt in the fluid.

If you think there's a rough chance you will be able to save your current transmission two months ago was the time to take it out of the car and strip it down to component parts.

Sorry to bring you bad news

I need a replacement 1988 190D transmission.

I could use one. What have ya got? I have a highly recommended transmission rebuilder who will rebuild mine for just a few hundred as a backup option. Let me know miles, year, price etc either here or by e-mail.

Don't know how you can get a good rebuild for that little (unless it's a favor), but if you can, that's roughly the cost of a used one. So I'd totally go for that. No point in paying for a used one when you can just get a rebuilt instead for the same amount.

I agree. If you can get yours rebuilt for $200 then you should definately go that route. Last used one I sold was for $250 and it sold in a couple days. There's a freshley rebuilt one on the classifieds for $1K.

It'd be about $250 for labor + $200 - 275 for parts, so around $500 total. And the guy gives his primary job priority so it may be slow. So yeah, I'm still open to buying a used one, especially in a nearby state such as TN.

It will be a few weeks before I get it pulled for the swap but if I were you I would still get the $550 rebuilt one. I'll let you know when I have it out if your still interested.

I am still interested. The transmission repair guy is four hours drive and it would be a reasonable drive for the savings but if you have a good used transmission, that would be simpler for me.
