WTB 722.118 Transmission and cars to pick from??

Something has goofed up in my trans on my 78 on July 20/21 I will be taking a two week trip....link to map below....so I was wondering if any members have a transmission that they don't need and/or any cars I can pick from. I would also consider a vacuum only transmission from the following years if the member also have the valve to fit on the injection pump. Let me know if anyone has anything. More then wiling to pull it!

Here is a rough map so far. Point E and I and stops to pick up a friend and for family visiting, the others are for junk yards...I am now seeing don't have any w123's

I'm about 40 minutes from the yard you are heading to outside of Chicago. Not sure how many 123's you'll find down there. There's also a pick - and - pull further north of me near the Wisconsin border. It's been 4-5 years since I have been to that one but, you'll be in the relative area so may be worth a try. I want to say it was in Gurnee or there abouts.

There is also Victory Auto Wreckers in Bensenville, IL.

I don't have a trans so can't be of help other than telling you about other yards.

The Pick-n-Pull in Wadsworth closed last fall. The Summit and Hammond Pick-n-Pulls haven't had much older MB iron in the last few months as I mentioned during the Memorial Day Sale. The Summit yard has a gasser 79 450 right now but one needs to be quick as that is a rapid turnover yard. Haven't been to Victory in I don't want to say how long so I can't comment about them. There are some other local yards on or near the south side of Chicago. I thought one of them listed a 123 or two. I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks for the updates guys, keep them coming! It would be neat to check out a few yards that have any older mbs....if there is any to be found.

Checked a little further. The 123 yard pickings have been quite slim around here lately. I don't recall the last time I saw a non-turbo 300D.

Circus Auto Parts in Riverdale lists an 84 300D. I have never been there so I can't advise how current the list is, prices, etc.

Another possibility is to troll the Chicago Craigslist before arrival and if you have the time. You might find something along these lines. (Not affiliated btw)

I'm inclined to think that a junkyard automatic transmission in a W123 is quite likely to already be bad. Sounds like lots of work just to find out. FWIW I was in Phoenix a couple months ago and a friend took me to lots of junkyards. Some W123 stuff, not lots though. I'm guessing you don't want to spend the $$$ to have yours rebuilt? I think it was $1500 for my 85 300TD...

Oh, and your road trip looks like a fun one!

cooljjay:

Assault has a .118 he is removing (he wants a .120). It needs a governor and speedo drive. Chicago area. Last posted 6/16.

Thanks again guys!

Browsing CL is a super idea, I was pondering that too as I got closer. I might send that guy a message on that one in Hentley. Those in LA look really nice..

Assault's transmission, has the exact same thing wrong with it as mine does...

Shipping heavy items between Canada-US is problematic

I would hazard a guess that shipping a transmission from Canada to the USA would be nearly as much as he is asking for the transmissions themselves. (Same goes for stuff coming the other direction.)

UPS would likely be out of the question. You could try one of the UShip firms for quotes but they would probably require you use a customs broker for the cross-border aspect, which will add at least $75 to the shipping.

Shipping rates have skyrocketed over the last four years, both postal and UPS/FedEx. I sell on eBay and it's a huge issue now for anything large or heavy. Basically I have to wait for a Canadian buyer, which takes forever (Canadians never took to eBay as much as folks in the USA for some reason).

CoolJay, I have a core .118 sitting in my shed here, I never offered it to you due to the shipping issues. It has unknown internal damage.

cooljjay & Assault:

Assault will apparently be removing his .118, and, as noted previously, most likely has a governor failure, which in turn caused damage to the speedo drive. cooljjay, you have not (I think) determined the nature or source of your problem. Governor service and replacement can be accomplished in the chassis (described and illustrated in the FSM), and is even easier on the bench.

You both may wish to start new threads or a joint thread in either Tech Help or Vintage, where it will attract more responses. For cooljjay, the point is that you may be able to solve your problem (whatever it is) without replacing the trans, or you may be able to effect a simple fix of Assault's trans as a replacement.

My speedo is awall in my car and now the transmission will not up shift and driving is a danger. I am sure it is a governor issues as in assaults, my transmission fluid is also black. I have been told about how to remove the tail end to inspect the governor which I vary well may end up doing.

I was just starting this thread in hopes someone may have or know where a 722.118 is laying that I may be able to pick up the cheap and have a spare for parts or two use. I really don't want to have another transmission that has the same issue as mine. Now something with a server leak, bad bands, etc I may very well be able to use.

And with the trip, I was hoping a member may have something I could swing by and grab...other wise I will be tearing into mine.

I wish I could afford a 1700$ new transmission or pay to have one flown in, but I can't and frankly the car isn't worth that...if that turns out to be the case I would rather junk the car and buy another.

I thank all the info coming from members...but I was sense the thread was going to some other place...

No chance a governor out of a 722.303 (W126 300SD) would work, is there? I have one...
