Someone on this list or in the diesel section was looking for axles for this car.

Is there a chart/thread somewhere that shows what year/part number/casting number covers fit what year OM601s/OM602s/OM603s?

I've only seen one in my whole life that wasn't installed in the car. I'm pretty sure the number was on the outside. It was from an OM602.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...BUT
I believe all 601 / 602 / 603 use the Same Timing cover.
If Y'all will look at GSXR's website he's got pictures with #s.

I've been there all night, and while there is indeed a bunch of timing case cover stuff there, there isn't anything stating what number timing covers fit what applications. If there is and I missed it (which I freely admit is entirely possible) please post a link. It would be much appreciated.

1985 190 D 2.2 L Takes # 601-015-0601
1993 300 d 2.5 L Takes # 601-015-0601 (ALSO) [Turbo versions of both are Same] AND since 603 is just a 602 with an extra cylinder it also takes the 601-015-06-01 I believe this INCLUDES the dreaded 603 "350" rod bending Motor. more Later source: MBWORLDPARTS

If I am not mistaken, to take the timing cover off I would need to remove the crank shaft pulley?

T.C. R+R
Yes, The Crank Pulley (Along with Everything else attached to the T.C. would
have to be removed) BUT ! First and Primo would be the Immobilization of the Crankshaft VIA the Flywheel. This Ain't an "Afternoon's work" Forethought and Organization are necessary! (Pictures and Ziploc bagging parts [Including the individual bolts] LABELING as you go will save you at re-assembly time!)

I have a 603 015 00 01 it’s from a 602 I wonder why it has a 603 number I offered it to the original poster I never got an answer from him probably because it doesn’t interchange with his or he is looking for the same number. I just want to find out if it’ll fit my 603 engine in case I need it

A Long, Long, Time ago on another Universe's Autobahn
(Like within living memory)
Zomeone @ Mercedes discovered that certain parts were interchangeable. Shortly, the Manufacturing process (AND Parts utilization methods) were Intentionally changed to approach "One Size" [or Part] "Fits All' [Or as Much as it was possible to do !] Zo, it's possible to have old (Or New Stock / "Old") parts that will fit your application. BUT ! Y'all best be Very,Very CAREFUL when using "Less than Yesterday's production run of Parts". Zometimes... The Parts themselves are ACTUALLY changed in design to "Improve" ( OR "CORRECT" ) the part... Case in point: The Timing Cover(s) under discussion. The "Newest" Version has "Strengthening" Lattices incorporated into the support within the cover. SEE: GSXR's pictures of his Failed T.C. on his website. V.S. the Newer one. http://www.w124performance.com/images/OM603_timing_cover/ http://www.w124performance.com/images/OM603_timing_cover/timing_covers1.jpg

I've seen those photos and more, and your points are all well taken, but we still don't know and are still unsure if the newer covers will fit the older engines. That is the question that needs to be answered before parts can be purchased, and projects begun.

If
It's an OM 601 , OM 602 or OM 603:
The "Newly" re-designed 601 part number will retrofit. (#601-015-06-01) [AKA Your MB dealer will have ONLY the "Corrected" part available for retail.] Other T.C. s THAT FIT the front of your OM 601 , 02 , 03 ARE out there. BUT! Y'all do not want them on your engine.
