I don't know about your budget considerations but perhaps this number will help you gauge your costs?

1800320605

(Bang it into a search engine and see)

I believe this is for the automatic flywheel for an OM617 - please check to be 100% sure before you buy.

Should we understand "ring gear" to mean the starter ring gear, or the differential ring gear (in which case the pinion gear would also be required).

If it's the starter gear, I have a new one. $40. shipped.

interzonearts:
I must withdraw my offer; the one I have is for V8s, and is larger in diameter.

The flywheel w/ring gear from OM615/616/617, M110, and other inline engines from the '60s, '70s, and into the '80s may be used as long as it is for a 12 bolt crank.
It will need to be balance matched to the original.

Yes, it's the starter ring gear - the one that goes on top of the flywheel.
The one i had got chewed up by an aftermarket starter pinion. Now i have the right pinion ( i hope) but still haven't gotten the ring gear.

Not sure if this part is also for the OM616, but I am sure I have mine from the 82 240D.

If i'm not mistaken the 5cyl FW is heavier than the 4cyl one but the diameter is the same so the ring gears should be exchangeable.

This question was asked above, but not answered, so once again:
Is the ring gear for a manual transmission flywheel, or for an automatic transmission flywheel?

Originally the engine came with an auto, but the flywheel was replaced by one machined to bolt to a land rover clutch. The ring gear from the original (auto) flywheel was transferred to the one thats on now.

Does it matter for "automatic" or "manual"? I thought the ring gear was the same for both...

...flywheels are different...

...but I thought the gear fitted to the flywheel was the same. (Otherwise there'd be a whole load of does my starter fit my "automatic" / "manual" engine type questions out there)

Stretch, you are indeed correct. My questions, and I think those of others, were asked from the standpoint of the OP searching for a complete flywheel/ring gear assembly.

The OP's request is now clear. The donor flywheels that can be a source of a suitable ring gear will be from a group of engines that includes:
M115, M180, M114, M130, M110, and OM615/616/617.
The ring gear has 140 teeth, an ID of 10 9/16", an OD of 11 7/8".
New ring gears are available, albeit a bit spendy.
