Wanted: 83-85 om617
The engine in my 85 300TD gave up the ghost so I am in search of a replacement. I am in the PNW so would prefer one within driving distance.
I have tools to pull if needed. Thanks! |

Sorry, PNW = Pacific Northwest, specifically Seattle. Too easy to get lazy with Acronyms... I don't mind reaching as far as Bellingham, Portland, or Spokane.
I will be under the car this week to get more details of the failure and follow up with specific parts needed. I fear I about to enter a black hole of "while I'm at it ..." but I'm too far into this car to stop now. Other option is another wagon with a good motor/bad trans since I just had my 722.3 rebuilt.

The motor isn't worth much. All the value is in the sls head. Be sure to pull it off and have it examined for cracks. If not cracked, you can rebuild it and put it on any old 617a short block.

Not true- some of the early versions from the w116 will not fit.

Does 617a not designate a turbocharged version?

Yes, and the W116 (first-gen 300SD) had a 617 turbo (an S-class has never come with an NA diesel in the US).

I am not following the "early w116 will not fit" comment.
As far as I know all the 617 turbo head castings are the same apart from the sls, and maybe even the non-turbo castings. This would imply that the blocks are the same. If not, I am curious to know the differences between block castings. A w116 oil pan should be a different configuration than a w123, but this could be switched to the new motor. Maybe this is what the other post was referring to "not fit"-ting? Or the oil filter housing, but again this is swappable. What am I missing here? Thanks. swapping lots of individual parts maybe needed- so yes this is what I was referring to. It's not a simple "swap the head" and put it in with some early versions. The intake/exhaust manifolds may be different, the oil pan, the engine mounts, the oil vapor system, ...

I will be taking the head in for sure. There are cracks I can't find so I leave that to the pros.
Can any one point me to a good thread to read for tips on inspecting the crank/pistons/rings with the head off? |
