Metal Top for 1995 SL500 for sale
 

This top is in excellent condition, color is magma Red. I have a 95 SL500 and do not want to keep the metal top. It lists for $20,000 at Mercedes; I will sell this one for $14,000. This is a very good deal, if you need a top for the 95 or similar SL's.

i must be missing something. is this the hard top that can be placed over the passenger compartment?

Yes, this is the full metal top that fits the SL and it can be removed easily if the owner wishes
to just use the convertible top for instance -- in the Summer, etc etc.

If someone has a similar SL500 without the metal top, they really need the full metal top to
sell the car at top dollar.

$14,000 - Fourteen thousand??? did you mean $1,400?
I got a Silver one off CL with storage rack and cover for free.
Usually see them for $100-$500, more for pano, almost all are garage kept, excellent condition.

These cars in average to better condition don't bring $ 14,000 with a top.

I bought one 3 years ago with stand and cover for $ 200 ( Two hundred and 00/100 dollars ) , the last one I bought was $ 80 ( Eighty and 00/100 dollars ) and came with the wind deflector that clips to the roll bar.

Every R129 came with a hard top so nothing is rare about them. Even the 97 and up somewhat rare Panorama glass tops can be had for ~ $ 3,000 to 4,000.

I bought them to have spare weatherstripping and insurance that a meteor will never strike my good car. ( I always leave the hard top on. )

i have had 2 parts car r129's and sold each hard top for <$500. i don't think they were metal (seemed to be fiberglass/composite of some sort but i could wrong). i know the panoramic roofs sell for a couple grand

I don't know what experiences you all have had, but the top (METAL) costs $20,000 at Mercedes. I feel that the $14,000 price is realistic, if you want to have a complete SL.

Any reasonable offer would be considered, but not in the hundreds or low thousands.

quoting list prices from MB is sort of useless as the dealer would likely discount that part deeply to a valued customer.
nobody is trying to be disrespectful but if this is like the regular hard tops (like the ones in my last post) you will not get close to the price you have listed.
if this a truly unique item and doesn't warrant comparison to these standard hard top options then I, for one, stand corrected.

All of them I've seen are aluminum, weigh about 70#.
The last one I sold for any offer, took $200, with a new headliner I installed, got tired getting in the way, after a year on CL.
I see one at a upullit (maybe $50) every few months, I don't look twice.

I would suggest doing an eBay search and scaling the price accordingly -- MB will probably sell us complete engines for our old cars too but that's not what the secondhand market brings.

I'd only look at _completed_ e bay top sales as asking price means nothing.

Our $ 14,000 top guy needs to jump on this one and make nearly 28 X original investment.

The c list seller claims they bought it from Mercedes for $ 1,200. . . . .

A top for $ 14,000 is delusional , A top for $ 1,400 is wildly optimistic , a top for $ 140 is priced about right. And, just why would our original poster want to devalue their car by $ 14,000?
