WANT TO BUY: Timing Chain Crimper
Looking to buy ($$) or trade (or both) the tool used to crimp the timing chain "center link" for the OM616 & OM617 engine's timing chain. Not interested in the off brands which are not designed to be used on these engine applications although some forum members have indicated they can make it work. There are apparently 2, maybe 3 manufacturers of this particular tool.
I used to see these on E B A Y about every 3 or 4 months, but not lately and trying to avoid spending $300 on a new one. Just looking for a non-broken used one. I have some stuff to trade, namely: 1. NEW nozzles in rebuilt injectors; 2. Rebuilt lift pump; 3. Rebuilt OFV with mod'd spring 4. A 240D rolling chassis with new tires (yes, willing to swap an entire car but it's missing a bunch of stuff although the tires have about 500 miles on them). PM if anyone has one. |

Are the diesel timing chains different than the m116/117 dual-row timing chains where a master link is used once the original chain is cut off?
And what's the benefit of not using a master link? Just curious, and making conversation.

If you are referring to the master link that uses a clip to retain the link on the chain, the clip is not a secure way to retain the link. Master links with clips are used when rolling in a new chain. The best/most secure way is to use the timing chain crimper that actually crimps the pin of the main link in place. Some people have attempted to "peen" the pin in place but the best method is to use the crimper that evenly stakes/spreads the pin for a secure fit.

To clarify, yes the tool which "peens" or mushrooms the pins' ends.

Greazzer,
If you will put the smooth side of the master link plate on the outside, you can peen the pins very nicely by backing it up with a dolly or hammer and peen with the ball side of a ball peen hammer. This works well as long as you peen the pin into the smooth side. The other side has sharp edges and will not seat well when peened. Hope this helps. |
