You mean an aluminum wheel that looks like a steel wheel? Or a Bundt wheel?

The first. It is a 14 x 5.5 11# wheel in excellent condition with a factory michelin tire.

Those are wonderful wheels. I have a big stack of the 6" ones that I'm hoarding and will slowly sell as I have been for years. If I keep my Fintail I'll put the 5 1/2" wheels that I have on it. I think if the tire is from 1981 you can safely consider it to be trash.

Of course the tire is unsafe for real use. It might be of interest though for someone wanting to show their car with all the original stuff in it.

I'll accept offers. I'll also get the tire removed if someone wants. The removal will probably reduce the shipping costs by nearly the cost of the removal.

Yeah, if it were more of a "car show" type of car having an original spare tire is interesting. But given that the wheel itself is something wonderful to use on lots of cars I think it has more value actually being used. It's only "correct" for a 1980 - 1982 240D that didn't have Bundt wheels.

No, not 1983. Those will have Bundt wheels. The aluminum steel look wheels were for the U.S. market only. No euro cars came with those wheels.

I always thought that in 83, on the 240d that the bundts were optional. I have had numerous 83 240ds and I don't think any of them came with bundts.

I'm pretty sure you're right, my dad's 83 had the aluminum steelies.

I don't think that is correct, but can't say for sure. I've never found the aluminum wheels on a 1983 car, and I've never found aluminum wheels with a date code of anything past mid 1982.

And it's definitely a US-only sort of thing. I think it is possible that they sent 240Ds tot he states with steel wheels again for 1983, but highly unlikely.

I'm happy to be incorrect about this. I would love to see the date code on such a wheel.

Where to find a date code?

Really won't prove anything will it? ...as a wheel could be made in 82 and installed from the factory on an 83 model year, right?

Date code is stamped into wheel, just like size and part number. You are right, it doesn't prove much of anything. I still do think those wheels are on 1983 240D automobiles but it would be interesting if someone found a documented case of it, and if so, the manufacture date of the subject car.

Here's a pic. This is of a 6" wheel but the stamping is in the same places on a 5 1/2" wheel...
