1990 Mercedes 560 SEL need a transmission and throttle body?
Good evening
I have a Mercedes 560 SEL with 223,000 miles. The transmission has lost reverse. Does anyone have a replacement unit for a reasonable price? I am also looking for a valve body? Ron Brown Richmond, VA 23220

Are all the other gears good? Do you want to repair or replace?

Not sure if it's the same, but I've got a 1988 560sl with about 80,000 miles on it getting parted out. It hasn't been run in years though.

Repair would be fine. All of the forward gears work great. Is it a diy job? I would love to hear more? Thanks Ron

You might search the forum for a table which shows each gear and which valves - K1, B2, etc - are used in each gear. Then maybe you can isolate the one that will cause reverse not to work.

1990 Mercedes 560 SEL need a transmission and throttle body?
Jason has two 560sl cars in his warehouse which have a 722.313 instead of a 722.323 as I believe your car has. The low mileage and clean fluid makes me believe the transmissions on both the 80-90,000 mile cars have. The 1986 560sl is one we might be able to make it run and test the trans. The 1988 560sl is ready to have its engine pulled with the exhaust and oil pan (and front subframe/axle) all already removed. There's really a minimal number of bolts to get that pulled out.
I checked the difference in the gearing ratios of a 1988 560sl to a 1990 560sel on automobile-catalog.com and the 560sl transmission should give you a little more guts out of the 2nd gear start than the 560sel transmission. Notice the higher 2nd gear ratio on the 560sl transmission in the image below. Personally, I think you'd prefer to go this way than the other. I'd hate to lose power starting off the line. But if you drop down into first gear often, then you might actually be disappointed. Notice the 560sel actually has a higher ratio for that 1st gear. 560sl: 560sel:

1990 Mercedes 560 SEL need a transmission and throttle body?
I just got word that I need to drive through Richmond on Jan 2nd for work. (Extremely rare for me to even need to leave the house for work.) So I'm going to put that trans from the 1988 560sl in the back of my truck. I could really used some New Years money! :-) PM me an offer for a trans delivered to your door on Jan 2.
