I'm gonna talk to somebody. the guy I got one of my e300s off of has access to a parts car. the shipping would be from Hamilton, NJ. I'm not even sure who would ship a heavy part like that. they ain't featherweights!

Thanks! I am still looking so far no luck at any pull-a-parts, or car part dot com.

One out of a E320 will work, you will have to swap the flange though.

No, it's a different ratio. 3.46 for diesel. 3.07 for e320.

it'll work but different ratio and not correctly.

I talked to the guy today and he said he wants $500 plus shipping. That's far too much IMO, but if I can help I figured I'd try.

Have just completed this very swap I can tell you for 100% fact both the gas and diesel is 3.07. $500 is WAY overpriced for a used diff. I paid less than $300 for a NOS one shipped to me from the UK.

Here is one for sale on ebay. I was going to buy this one until I found the new one.

need a definitive answer to this PLEASE! Not finding anything for a '98 E300D ANYWHERE.

Lots of E320s out there. If that differential is the same then i'm good.

last e320 I worked on had a 3.07. I just swapped transmissions between two and they were 3.07. my e300 has a 3.46.

Maybe some are both the same. you should check them. I looked online and found one on eBay from a 98 e300 with a 3.07 for $100. I'm not sure why mine has a different ratio.

When using car part, look up " Carrier " , there are about 24+ across the USA .

Carguts in Blacksburg SC has 5 of them for $ 125 each .

An item like this will ship easy _IF_ it is very tightly packed in a box. Putting bubble wrap / newspaper inside is a sure bet the stuffing will beat flat, heavy object bounce around then break through the box.

A diff won't be damaged by being dropped in shipping if there are a few tight layers of cardboard around it.

My 98 E300 is 3.07. I posted a link to one on ebay but I guess the OP did not see it.

Thanks all for the input. I’m still on the hunt. Went to my local lkq yard yesterday and looked at four e320s, two wagons and two sedans. All four had 3.07 differentials. Sweet! Big difference being. Two had bolt on axles and two had “clipped in” axles. I’m not sure what this difference is actually called.
So, I went to the desk to inquire about the price... $215 she said! No thank you.
I’ll just pick one up from carguts already pulled and ready come Monday. Just got to make sure the axles attach in the same way... hmm

I'm pretty sure you can swap clipped in axles and bolt on.

The differential on my SL has bolt on but I've found a CLK with same diff casting # / ratio but has clip in. At some point I'll take apart to confirm but at minimum I have the correct ring and pinion.

While you are there, can you find out what the building they are in used to be? I have bought from them and did a google satellite / road view and it looks like some sort of factory complete with a tea pot type water tower.

I got the swap done. Picked up a used diff out of a e320 from carguts for $54! Came out looking nicely cleaned and painted. Had to swap the input yolk from the diesel diff to the new diff. No big deal. Both differentials has the bolted on axle style. It’s and external torx head on the axle bolts. Pretty straight forward job. Did it all in about five hours after Work on Tuesday evening with the aid of a car lift. Got done about midnight. My body hates me for it. earned $300 for my troubles. Wallet is happy about it

Thanks all for the input!
