1980 300SD INSTUMENT CLUSTER

WTB: 1980 300sd instrument cluster. Both the speedometer and the tachometer have stopped working. LMK if you have one plus a price.

Consider fixing it instead of trashing. For the speedo maybe you just need to order the new plastic gears. I fixed mine and it was a snap. Maybe $25-30.

My tach has never worked, however, and I live with it.

It will probably cost the same if you just have someone fix it for you: Overseas Speedometer | Speedometer & Odometer Repairs

Or if you like adventure and have a few hours of spare time you could try it yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNoDAMgL_vg
how to remove cluster: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mercedes-R107/92-INTERIOR-Removing_the_Instrument_Cluster/92-INTERIOR-Removing_the_Instrument_Cluster.htm

Tachometer can probably be fixed for two cents, literally. Pop the hood, on the driver side on the wheel arch there is a round cylinder. This is your tachometer reader. Unscrew it, and pull out the assembly with a few metal pins sticking out. Might need pliers, be gentle and loosen each side evenly. It will pop out. Put two pennies inside and reassemble. You tach should work again. If not, there is a cable going to the base of the tachometer reader inside there is hard plastic that has probably crumbled apart. Reseat the cable so it is firm inside the base of the tachometer sensor and you'll be good to go. Otherwise it is you tachometer sensor.

If you can find someone who will let a working cluster go for that price more power to you.

Currently on ebay.com, for a working w116 85MPH cluster the lowest is 125$ shipped. For a non-working one (broken mileage counter) 90$ and its in Km/h then prices steadily climb from there.

If you buy three clusters at 150 total cost. I would imagine (I have not verified this myself) that the cost would equate the same if you just fixed the original one. (esp. once one considered the time to pull the clusters and keep replacing them, not to mention the irritation caused by another failed cluster)

Something for the op to consider
